No doubt the pilot was delighted to have the reinforced cockpit door to hide behind until all the pax were safely on the bus :D

By flying away, one assumes.

My first thought! Daft comment. Although I did then think about what flyclub said...

I hate to be ignorant - but how is this even possible!!

Do they not just follow what ATC is telling them to do - surely to god - they just don't see a runway and say whey hey - I will land here.

Saying that - was flying into Orlando 2 weeks ago - saw "the" runway - told my wife - oh we must be going round - blah blah - trying to sound like I knew what I was talking about - about 5 mins later we land at MCO. Was Sanford I spied on the way past.

Thanks for posting the link.

Found this there:

Condolences to the Eirjet crew. Confusing Ballykelly with Eglinton is horribly easy to do, particularly as the 08/26 runway was once capable of supporting dispersed V-bomber ops and is still 2,000 m plus, I believe. The tower controller really should have been aware of the possibility of confusion but it's easy to criticise with hindsight. Ballykelly with its big hangars and runway probably must show up much better that Derry/Eglinton.

Did the crew claim they had landed at Cardiff (West)?

Good enough to earn you a BA Second Class Honours Upper Division ;)

Given MOL claims about how full his planes are, intersting that there were only 39 passengers on board this service - about 25% load (good job as it happens or they would have a needed a second and third bus ;) )

Looks like this route will soon be dropped at this rate - no doubt blamed on excessive increases in airport charges.

If only they'd listened to their own advice

NEWS CLIP HERE

Priceless that in an age of so called high security that an army base which has been bombed previously allowed an aircraft anywhere near it let alone land.

One wonders what would've happened had this been a USAF base it tried to land on. We're sorta twitchy 'round these here parts....

Interesting.

Are you referring to the commerical aircraft which landed at RAF St. Athans ages ago mistaking it for Cardiff? ;)

The two airports are very close (for those not familiar with the area).

I thought one of the best was the American bomber that had been flown non stop from the states to exhibit at the Farnborough air show but managed to do its' turn over Blackbush aerodrome before flying all the way back without realising the mistake. :)

Hmmm, maybe. ;)

A similar incident also happened over here in 1989 when a Dan Air plane landed at Langford Lodge instead of Aldergrove airport. From the TV footage last night it looked an even more unlikely spot to touch down than Ballykelly.
