Ah, right. I assumed it'd be on the app (the black cab apps over here allow you to do so, for example).

I wouldn't do so unless it were the cultural norm - and it seems to be debatable even in the land of the free-ly flowing tips.

Uber's official stance is that you should not tip.

An Uber driver will get a tip from me, if extraordinary service is provided.

But a tipping sign will result in a 2-3* rating since I do not like being pressured to provide tips. This results in an uncomfortable ride...

Ride to the airport on Uber: $18 no tip required
Ride from the airport via cab: $58 including 20% tip

Why are cabs still in business again? Oh right, they and the airport authority are in cahoots to make sure Uber/Lyft can't pick up from the airport, only drop off...

Can you please provide the relevant source for this (mis)information?

A 4-star rating over this?

Drivers with ratings under 4.6 can be terminated by Uber (who knows if this actually happens though).

The driver simply wants to change the tipping culture associated with Uber and make the passengers aware that tips are not included in their fares.

I think the appropriate recourse would be to write Uber and suggest tipping be added as an option in the app (as it is with Lyft) in order to avoid the awkward sign in the car.

I'm aware drivers under 4.6 can be terminated, in fact I'm an Uber driver myself. We're told specifically in the training materials never to ask for tips. The sign is inappropriate and against Uber's policy.

It may be against Uber's policy in your city, but it is not against the policy in all of the cities.

In my city it is permissible, although I agree it is tasteless. I've seen some tacky ones, but they are becoming very very common in cars here.

Riders can tip.

As a rider, you are not obligated to offer your driver a gratuity in cash.

If you decide you would like to tip, your driver is welcome to accept.

Uber's appeal to me has always been not needing to worry about cash and tips. I've only once tipped a driver, when I needed to move two boxes across town and the driver kindly got out and helped me bring them up the driveway. I too would feel like I'm being extorted in the presence of such a sign, as it signals no tip would result in a bad rating.

Heck, if people continue to tip for the usual service that may become the norm anyways -- I'd like to thank them in advance for ruining what was a super convenient, stressless, tipless alternative to the despised American taxi cabs.

This is the only situation where I would tip; the driver going above and beyond what he/she is there to do. At the end of the day, the driver is being paid to drive you. That's it. He helps you with bags, boxes, finding pokemon, that's above and beyond!

If they feel that the compensation from driving without tips isn't enough, then don't drive and complain about how you're not making enough.

Stop tipping Uber drivers for providing normal services. Seriously, it's like we always find a way to punish ourselves, unbelievable!

teddybear99 Aug 28, 2016 12:55 am

Uber is advertising for drivers on television, so I guess the demand is there, however, seeing the prices they charge, how does anyone ever make any money? Uber takes their cut, and most of the time, the remaining amount barely covers the cost of gas. Add in the maintenance and insurance costs on the vehicle, they are actually losing money on most trips.

I wonder what the turnover is for drivers at least in the USA?

I drive in Durham, the guy picked me up in Durham. So it was impermissible in my city.
