Can't you also walk down too, suppose to be a nice hike?

Well I can't speak for them as I wasn't there but perhaps they were tired or just wanted to get back. It was at night after all.

Uber Van in Paris is great for large families. Normally with 6 people you'd have to split the family and take two taxis, but Uber Van, which has always has been a Mercedes for me, is cheaper than two taxis. And very comfortable. ^

bigboy Jul 8, 2016 3:09 pm

Ok. Uber in Lausanne - sort of works. I tried using one to get from the train station to my hotel in St. Sulpice and it took him 25 minutes to get to the train station. (traffic). Didn't seem to be a ton of coverage.

As for Munich - don't bother.

Could you explain? Don't bother because it's not much cheaper than taxis? Or there's too much traffic? Or there aren't enough drivers?

stimpy Jul 9, 2016 2:20 pm

What about Berlin?

Not enough drivers. I've been to Munich twice this year - the first time, I took an Uber from the airport, but it took a while for him (15+ min) to pick me up. On my second trip, I took the S-Bahn to city center, which is a better idea anyway.

And in both trips, when I opened up the Uber app while in or near the city center, there might be one car, but it usually said "no cars available."

That's interesting, I was in Munich for two days in October and used the app a lot, there were not a ton of cars, but I never had to wait more than five minutes in the city center. I wonder if something has changed?

I used it a year ago while there. Took about 20 minutes for one to become available (we were at an S-Bahn Station near the heart of the city). Driver was very friendly though and got us where we were going quickly for a low price.

gilbertaue Jul 10, 2016 7:06 pm

Recently took UBER from CDG T1 to the Pullman which was close by as I had lots of luggage (there is of course the free train as well). Driver took about 20mins to turn up and finally had to meet him at the departure hall as there was supposedly some construction on the lower arrivals level which prevented him getting to me.

Heading back from the Pullman Roissy to T2 I again booked a UBER and he arrived quickly.

Both times friendly drivers who also assisted with the luggage.

Brisman33 Jul 24, 2016 2:17 am

Manila - very satisfied, a much better option than the thieving taxi drivers with their battered old bangers.

Bangkok - Used once to the airport at B500 flat rate which is more than a taxi would cost IF the meter was used, however try finding one who'll turn it on.

London - Cheaper than a black cab and just as good. From an airport hotel to Terminal 4 the cost for two passengers was the same as the Hoppa bus.

chrisny2 Jul 25, 2016 4:26 pm

Tallinn, Estonia - Took UberPop to and from TLL. Nice service, both drivers assisted with luggage. One who spoke English was very friendly and talkative.

Sao Paulo

Plentiful Uber, and cheaper than a cab (at least the one from town to the airport). It was half the price of an airport taxi.

solewalker Jul 25, 2016 4:41 pm

Montevideo

Service started in November 2015. Both drivers I had were excellent and they were both reasonably priced.

solewalker Jul 25, 2016 4:43 pm

Buenos Aires

Just started fairly recently, so they don't have that many drivers yet. Prices are comparable to taxis, but there's a sense that there's a lot of antagonism towards Uber. The cars we took were nicer than some of the taxis. One of our taxis was running out of fuel and at serious risk of a dead battery - we barely made it to our hotel!

wco81 Jul 25, 2016 6:44 pm

The way they're advertising for drivers, they may be having a hard time keeping drivers working for them in the US.

Anyone use Uber in Sydney, at the international terminal?

They are suppose to have a virtual pool and some kind of dedicated waiting area. Sounds like you won't be able to choose which kind of car.

Will be traveling with a party of 3. My understanding is that some UberBlacks will include SUVs but still be cheaper than a UberSUV ride:

http://sydney.ubermovement.com/uberblack/

Even UberBlack is 2-3x the fare of UberX for relatively a short ride to the CBD but if we end up getting a midsize sedan, it still may not be enough for all the luggage.

lmwong1977 Sep 4, 2016 3:05 pm

Used it at Dublin to get from the Hilton (charlemont) to my bus tour meet-up point in the northside of town at 6am-ish. Came in 2 minutes, lucky not much traffic that early (the construction from connecting the two tram lines jams up the streets during biz hrs) so got there early. I think most people used the Hailo app as there were several cab drivers waiting for people talking to the concierge. My phone was running out of space, so just stuck with the app I had.

You might be better off with a normal cab, many of them are minivans/people carriers (for no extra charge) or station wagons/estates and you'd be able to pick them out of the lineup. As you mentioned, it's a short trip and quality and cleanliness in Sydney are good.

wco81 Sep 4, 2016 3:27 pm

Hmm, I heard there was a 50% surcharge on the "maxi taxi" which are the minivans, while there are station wagons which might fit 3 large and 3 carryon suitcases without the surcharge.

samosa Sep 5, 2016 6:14 am

Just used it three times in Wien (Vienna Austria) and the first time the driver refused to haul us and said uber doesn't allow him to carry suitcases and yet he opened his trunk which had what looked like nazi insignia. He cancelled the ride and I got charged 8 Euro. I complained and they credited my account but blamed me for not contacting the driver to ensure he wanted the fare. The next ride was fine. The last ride the guy stopped to get gas. I didn't complain about that but I feel uber service has gone down significantly worldwide recently and the customer service seems to blame the passenger.

aztimm Sep 13, 2016 11:32 am

I just used Uber a bunch while on a mileage run to SGN.

My hotel offered me an airport pickup, for USD$45, while the cost of the Uber was maybe $4.

I did a couple of UberX rides, they were mostly around $1-2, but took forever in the mess of traffic.

Then I decided to try Uber-Moto, where you ride on the back of a motorcycle. The driver does provide a helmet.
It was pretty scary at first. Heck, I nearly just got off, but I'm glad I stuck with it, as after a couple of rides it felt almost natural.
Min fare was VD10k, about US$0.40, with most under VD20k.

I'd recommend picking a short trip in nice weather to get your feet wet, so that if it does rain (and chances are high it will), and you have crazy traffic.

I guess it is pretty new. Looks like Uber launched the, "moto," option in April in several cities, mostly in SE/Southern Asia.

Here's a piece I found on it in Vietnam:
https://newsroom.uber.com/vietnam/ubermoto-eng/

It worked the same as any other Uber, you select, "Uber Moto," instead of, "UberX," or, "Uber Black." (those were the only options in Ho Chi Minh City)

I did see a few surges on UberX, but never on Moto. So there's that too. But even at 2x an UberX would be maybe $5 for most places town. As I said above, in a car, you're really subject to horrible traffic. A motorcycle can take smaller streets, cut around cars, etc. It was never really scary for me though.

Was there a language barrier? I noticed that when I tried to use Uber in Bali.

Well I don't speak Vietnamese and the drivers spoke very little English. They all picked me up and got me where I put I was going on the app. When they first stopped they'd hand me the helmet and wait for me to hop on and get situated.

When I got off, I handed the helmet back...and after the first gave a ^ to make sure everything was ok, that's what I started doing too (seems an international symbol for OK).

On a motorcycle, there really isn't much chatting you can do. At stoplights, I'd wait for him to put a foot/feet down, then I'd do the same.

All of the Uber drivers I had in Vietnam were guys.

When I was in Rio in June, I had 2 women drivers. One was such a timid driver...she put the parking break on every single time she stopped, even for a few seconds. The other drove me from hotel to GIG airport and was good.
Language barrier was there too, but I speak some Spanish, which is pretty close. And all of the drivers spoke at least a little English.

Hah! Try Uber in Miami. Fortunately I can manage in Spanish. :) Also had French speaking drivers in Miami and New York.

How do you input Vietnamese place names in the app. If you don't speak the language?

Do they have it in Hanoi, Hoi An or Hue?

The Uber app had all major hotels, tourist sites, bars, and restaurants in English. I tried to pick places where pickup would be easier...so rather than near the Cathedral (which could be crazy busy), I walked a block to the Hard Rock Cafe (which was listed in the Uber app) and got a pickup there.

According to the Uber website, they are only available in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Both have the Uber-Moto option.

Chase has first free ride with Uber, up to $30, by signing up with a Chase card and using the code ChaseUber. Until the end of the year.

https://www.chase.com/digital/uber

Not sure if existing Uber accounts are eligible.

Can you use the credit overseas?

Palal Oct 3, 2016 5:27 pm

Baku and Bucharest

Used uber in Baku and Bucharest in July.

In Baku, Google maps has a bad database with no house numbers which makes navigation a challenge. Once I got a Kia Rio with a broken windshield. Another time was a recent Mercedes sedan so YMMV.
Also I imagine there may be a language barrier due to bass GPS data.

In Bucharest going from the city to the airport things were fine. Had trouble getting it from the airport.

I use it extensively in Lisbon and so far have not had better service than here.

Not sure, but I happened to set up my Uber account when in Taiwan, and duly received a sign-up bonus in TWD that was not applied to my first ride. Nor was it ever applied to any future rides in different countries.

YMMV, but I would be surprised if a U.S. promo code worked on an international ride.

Used Uber recently in Sri Lanka to get from Colombo airport to my hotel about 40km away and it was super convenient and the cheapest way to go!

My understanding is that applying the parking brake is actually the way drivers are taught in Brasil, and may actually be the law. At least that's what I remember one of my Brasilian friends told me when I asked why he was applying the parking brake at each traffic light.

Been using Uber almost exclusively, since arriving in Kampala. I wouldn't have known unless a fellow Flyertalker I met on the flight in had told me. Points to note:

- Cars vary a lot.
- Only one of the drivers I've had, so far, has had a proper dashboard mount for his phone.
- Some of the drivers struggle with navigation.
- Quality of navigation provided by Uber is variable.
- Once you've been assigned a driver, it's best to call him and tell him where you are.

Uber itself seems buggy here (it has been up and running for five months). When the driver is on his way, instead of the smooth indication of progress I get back home the car flicks to different bits of the map.

Wow I never would have thought to use Uber there too. I think it would be good for going back and forth to Entebbe. Otherwise in Kampala I always jump on the back of a motorcycle and pay them enough for a beer. The traffic is generally too jammed to get around by car anyways. Motorcycles are the best way.

Hell will freeze over before I take one of those lethal looking Boda Bodas :D. And yes, the traffic at rush hour is pretty unbearable.

I used Uber extensively this summer in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Very easy to use and incredibly cheap. Drivers were always happy to pick up and drop off at hotels, downtown, airports, etc. Almost none of them spoke enough English to communicate with me, but it was not a problem because the Uber app allows you to put in the destination and the drivers took me where I wanted to go. I found that it worked well to request the Uber and then immediately send the driver a text message advising the exact location (i.e. "Pick up at Sheraton Hotel") since the phone's GPS signal can be wonky.

I saw a lot of sad taxi dispatchers when I stepped to the curb and waited for my Uber. But the hotel front desk and bell staff actually said Uber was safer because the drivers are all vetted and background-checked, whereas the taxi drivers are not.

CMK10 Oct 25, 2016 5:09 pm

I used Uber twice in Copenhagen last weekend. First of all, prices, like everything else in Denmark, are really high. I took two three mile rides, which in Durham would run me about $6. They were $12-13 there. Secondly, apparently Uber exists in a state of legal flux over there so allegedly the taxi companies and the police are anti-Uber. I was told by my first driver if we were questioned that I was her friend.

Both drivers were very friendly and both cars were neat. Both also knew the city quite well.
