Is it still too risky??

I am very tempted to try a milegae run to get the 240K points.

Now that things have settled down..is it worth the risk?

I have to say, my thoughts have been returning to this opportunity!

PROs
  • Looks like the [Son Of][Return Of][Last Remake Of] Swissair is going to fly (at least until April)
  • Looks like Sabena also has some life in it
  • Fares are looking even cheaper than before
  • If the new airline tries to join OneWorld, qualifying for QFGold for 2001 may well mean OW Gold status somewhere down the line
  • They've been good to us, they probably deserve our support

Cons
  • Are we sure this offer is still valid? If it was underwritten by the airline, it may not be honoured (just like the shareholder offer)
  • The QF RTW deal is looking very iffy (sorry, translation: unlikely). JAL has already withdrawn from QF, and a few more losses like that will make a RTW very difficult.
  • Dunno about you, but, between me and my GF, we need to do the run by 31st Nov. If things are going to go bad, that's about when it will happen http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
  • QF are being very cagey about the long term, so it is still possible that the QF programme will still collapse

Overall
I'm tempted to risk it. If QF survives in any form, the 240K miles will still be worth the GBP 600 or so outlay. F to HNL should still be possible as long as they have at least one US partner, and there would still be enough left over for a few short hauls or a R/T upgrade. Of course, life is not without risk, so I'm minded to ensure that the trip(s) are enough value in their own right.

Of course, it's possible I'm just a mileage junkie http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Seems it is now SAFE to fly Swissair with eyes open after April 2002.

hfly Oct 23, 2001 2:51 pm

Remember that there were a lot of people who were so sure of themselves that they bought SR shares in order to get 5000 miles. They all lost. Considering how many great mile deals there are out there right now, I'd go for another airline.

Rudi Oct 23, 2001 3:48 pm

there will be no more Swissair flights after march-30-2002.

There will even be no more Swissair after march-30-2002.

Those that did buy some SR shares the day airoli posted the tip (or in the following 3 weeks) - made a nice profit (over 50%) if they sold all but one shares a month later ... if .... One FlyerTalker, some weeks ago, posted, that he did so!

Surely, even if there is no more Swissair there will still be Crossair and Qualiflyer is its FFP too?

sjharte, considering that Qualiflyer is also the FFP of airlines such as TAP, LOT or SABENA and has agreements with many large airlines such as AA, CX and QF, I suppose that it will continue at least for now.

However, many of the airlines collectively owning Qualiflyer Loyality Ltd. are in financial trouble, which to me puts the program at risk in the long run. If we're lucky, the program will continue, or we will at least be able to transfer our miles in a new or other program. If not... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Personally, I consider to keep flying Crossair+, but accruing my miles in another program, such as AAdvantage or Finnair Plus.

Rudi Oct 24, 2001 12:34 pm

may be airoli will allow us to transfer our Qualiflyer-miles into the frequent traveller program of air-oli? http://www.olimade.com/airoli/ ?

quilly Oct 24, 2001 1:06 pm

i would hope that my miles would go alot further in airOli. double miles to NYC - what a bargain.

all boeing fleet though - not very pro european!!

fantastic website though. works better than most of the real thing! well done arioli!!!

airoli Oct 24, 2001 2:52 pm

Thank you rudi & quilly! Both of you will immediately be invited to our top-tier "club!adoratio"...

Actually I started the site as a school project but enjoyed doing it so much that I kept it online and update it from time to time.

The Boeings have one important advantage though: their factory livery looks - purely by coincidence - very much like airOli's ! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

quilly Oct 25, 2001 4:46 am

thank you airOli : i cant wait to fly.

about the livery - must save the airline thousands on expensive resprays! crossair + take note http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

btw : the new crossiar lounge at BSL is absoulutely gorgeous. spent a very nice morning there yesterday and had it practically to myself. it's on three levels. as you enter there's a 'cafe / bar' area with a pond, small fountain and a a small japanses style wooden bridge! there are also a number of palm trees scattered around.up one level is a circular atrium with 360 views of BSL. there are relaxation chairs each with it's own headphone (didn't try these), sofa areas with tv's and an internet access area. the floor is a beautiful dark hardwood. further up, under a partial glass dome is the bar, but this was closed for publicity shots. apparently opens at 1430 and i left for london b4 then. great lounge. want to travel thru basle again soon!

I have to admit, this is really funny.

Especially the frequent flyer KILOMETERS

You did a very very good job Airoli. You had me fooled there for a minute thinking this is for real. Sure looks really professional.

thojo Oct 25, 2001 9:31 am

I wonder if we should ask Randy to open up a dedicated forum for AirOli. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

As soon as Cologne is a regular destination for AirOli, I'll gladly switch from Crossair+ and LH, hoping to be a club!adoratio member soon by accumulating thousands of kilometers (assuming that AirOli will give me a generous minimum kilometer credit for every one of my weekend trips).

PremEx Oct 25, 2001 11:18 am

Rumor has it that AirOli are making overtures to join Star Alliance sometime in the Spring of 2002.

This would be great for Star Gold access to Oli's superior lounge facilities, IMHO. Where else can you enjoy a live DJ/Disco at a major airport these days?

airoli Oct 25, 2001 2:47 pm

LOL! I really do feel flattered. Thank you all so very much for your kind words. dgolds even sent me an email with hints how to debug the site.

I didn't modify the site for quite some time now but given all this feedback as well as the current situation on Swiss airports, I'll use the next weekend to bring it up to date...
