It's not the fact that I can't reserve seats even when using the Qatar PRN, it's the issue that my PEN-DOH-LHR/LGW-EDI is only ticketed lGW-EDI.

where are you seeing this? In your BA PNR is it showing all sectors? and in your QR PNR is it showing all sectors?

EDIT: just to add that I note your previous post where you say the flights are showing as "flight not available". can you check the QR site and just do a dummy booking for your dates and see if they are still running? QR recently did some time changes for PEN flights but it is vaguely possible that some random dates the flights may have been cancelled.

Just phone up BA then and speak to them to sort it out.

BA spoke with the OW helpline who resintated my booking legs of EPN-DOH-LHR which had been cancelled in error.

as an aside, BA did mention that Qatar had made some cancellations to their LHR flights in Oct/ Nov 2018

Anyone else that booked PEN looking at going elsewhere as well? Wondering whether to go to SIN for a few days, and whether to use MH, Air Asia or Silk Air. Leaning towards MH on the way out as QR will check through then.

I can't find much info about PEN though and whether they have a transfer process.

If using OW airlines is important (TPs, Avios) KA fly PEN HKG and vv. Mrs PtF and I flew KA CNX HKG earlier this year, however QR wouldn’t check bags through beyond CNX onto KA (we were on a HEL DOH CNX HKG CEB itinerary) because CNX systems didn’t allow for it - so we had to retrieve bags and check-in again. Not sure if PEN would throw up similar issues - CNX and PEN appear to be not dissimilar in size.

I'd get off, spend a couple of days in Penang and then grab an Air Asia ticket to SIN. You can often get them for £20 each way.

You used to be able to get the ferry to Butterworth from Penang and then take a train (around 12 hours) to Singapore which ran right through the very scenic countryside of Malaysia - but not sure if you still can. Might be an option for you if you're not in a rush and the train still runs.

I took this train a couple of years ago; the scenery is indeed beautiful, but the train is almost too modern; lit like an operating theatre, over air conditioned, disappointing café bar food.

So it's basically a mobile version of Singapore...

huge variety of options available to you via full service airlines and low cost carriers
hong kong bangkok china(apologies cant remember the airline) plus air asia tiger air
silk air down to singapore is relatively expensive
within malaysia you could consider langkawi, drive down through the cameron highlands to Kl then on to malacca
you could also consider borneo or cambodia
penang is also a cruise destination so perhaps you could pick up a cruise
whatever you do you will have a wonderful time
