Well, bloody hell I'm not redoing the numbers! LOL.

My numbers are of course just as a guide. I mean in reality if you bought with a QF ANZ credit card you'd double your mileage outright, and other things like that that really make my numbers not terribly realistic, but more as a base for generic comparison.

Anyway it exercised the mind to sit down and figure it all out.

Interesting, we always get travel cuts in the second half of the year as we attempt to "cut costs". I tend to use N leaving home -if available (which usually in the morning and fixed), and flexible fares when coming back (which often changes). Having done so have saved 1000's of $. You can buy about 3 (N class) fares for a Y class (on MEL-SYD/CBR/HBA/BNE) - and given a fixed travel budget, the lower the cost per trip, the more trips. 3 N's = 30 SC's + 3000 points, 1 Y = 20 SC'2 + 1000 points. But that was all pre-Jul 1, under the new regime I think K's may be the way to go.

QF Res (or TA): I'm sorry (sir/madam), there are no more K seats available...it appears oher members of FT got in first...you'll have to upgrade to (H, B, Y)...

RichardMEL, that made interesting reading - thanks! I guess the other thing to consider is the relative value of 100,000 QF miles vs. 100,000 generic US FF miles. Looking at award flight levels, upgrades etc the QF miles are worth significantly less.

I'm in a similar situation to you, in that most of my flying is international in discount Y. Thanks to the cheapest Star RTW and 3 cheap return flights to NZ this year, I'll have Star Gold on AC. I wouldn't even have hit silver on QF (or NZ, for that matter, which is the one *A FFP which has followed the revenue-based model rather than the mileage-based model most Star carriers have used). The thing is, I can't help wondering how long it will be before all airlines figure out that the QF/NZ model makes far more business sense than the UA/AC model.

The only thing more certain than death and taxes is that FF programs will change - and you all know which direction they will change. It only takes one to start the ball rolling.

Oh absolutely. The question then is: Who do you take advantage of? The generous ones for miles/short term status, or the other for long-term goals (like lifetime Silver/Gold, etc).

However that's a different thread.
