Finally got to check out one of these this afternoon - deceptively easy to use, and somehow they got the seat preference wrong - easily changed.
Staff are in attendance to provide assistance, although I specifically said that I wanted to stumble through it - they seemed a bit miffed, but if I make all my mistakes the first time, I will remember them the next time.
Two machines located in the Qantas Club as well, but a lot of people seemed to prefer the reception desk - God only knows why.

After using a similar machine in London for BA travel, I think this is the way forward. At least until everyone else catches on!
I liked the web presentation too. Very clear, but I thought it was funny how they kept saying "If you would like to change your seat and sit at the back of the plane, here's how". It's like they are trying to promote the back of the plane as if it was the best place to sit!!

Dunno if I'll use them, what's your chance of an op-uprade when checking in with one of these things? :-)

AFAIK op-upgrades are always allocated behind the scenes; I don't believe the checkin staff have any authority to issue them. So using the kiosk shouldn't make any difference.
