If you look at the how full QF1 and 2 is for Nov, Dec 22, January 23, clearly Qantas needs 5 more.

No. Hence the issues.

QF1 tonight (24 Oct) left SYD 6h15m late, leaving a departure from SIN to LHR at o535 instead of 2345. (I am cursing in the Crown Plaza at Changi waiting for it.) The aircraft is late because it arrived at SYD about 12 hours late on the last rotation to LHR. I don't know why.

Aircraft appears to be still recovering from major issues on Oct 21: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/vh-oqb.

Apparently the issues were that one of the slides would not deploy. So (I was told) they had to offload lots of pax who were near the affected exit.

Funny if the affected exit was downstairs door one ;-)

well funnily enough at LHR that door was not available so we had to troop back through J. (Not the end of the world I am aware :) )

Is there any way to tell which particular aircraft will be used for your flight?

I was wondering if I could keep an eye out for whatever plane is being used for QF1 today (11th Nov).

Those are the ones currently in the air.

That said, one just literally pulled up in front of the lounge.

The call sign is VH-0QH.

On Flight Radar, you can also see what aeroplane is scheduled to operate an upcoming flight once it has the information

I think you mean registration number rather than callsign

This morning’s flight arrived on time, despite late departure.

Today’s fun was waiting for a passenger to be escorted off first by a policeman.

When a fellow FTer does some work to help you, most people respond kindly. I shall note this prior to responding to any more of your posts.
