QF9 Cancelled Oct 12 / QF10 cancelled Oct 13
QF9 MEL-PER-LHR cancelled on Friday October 12
thus the return service
QF10 LHR-PER-MEL cancelled Saturday October 13
Whilst a single cancellation of a flight is pretty insignificant - I remember some speculation about possible tech stops and diversions (remember: United's fuel MayDay a couple of weeks ago in SYD ? )
Are any of the aeroplanes weight restricted between PER & LHR? (one direction more than the other?)
Have there been any unscheduled fuel stops or diversions ?
There are lots of suitable aerodromes en-route to LHR close the destination, not necessarily as easy on the return to PER.

There certainly are lots of places near LHR to stop and get fuel, but AFAIU the crew are near their limits for hours. Therefore you need not just fuel at the stop but another crew to take over. ISTR that QF had a relief crews at at least one European alternate “just in case” for the inaugural flight, but don’t know if they still have crews anywhere but LHR.

Don't believe any diversions.
The MEL-PER sectors have been cancelled at least once to make up time.
Believe this particular service was cancelled after ZNC had issues in SFO on the SFO-MEL leg (which continues as QF9)
On flight times LHR-PER generally gets the most favourable winds with some flights well under 16hours

The above cancellation of QF9/10 over this weekend is due to the 20 hour delay to QF50 out of SFO yesterday.

The joys of having a small fleet of 6 787-9s ... 2 more coming soon, the other 6 were only ordered earlier this year and coming in 2020, making for 14 ... which matches QF's fleet size of 12xA380, seems to be what QF views as the sweet spot (by comparison AA has approx 70 B787 ordered). Until 2020 any disruption has an impact as they simply dont have the planes. Luckily been very reliable so far.

Even with a fleet of 12, given the efficiency of 787's I am sure QF wouldn't have some sitting around doing nothing all day, although there is more flexibility about which flights to cancel if needed. IIRC they ran the A380's quite tight when QF9 was moved to late evening departure from MEL via DXB, which caused them some troubles as well, depending on where the fleet was in relation to the problem.

Yeah, Joyce's bean counter background will ensure maximum use is gleaned from the fleet with the cost of the "Occasional" event like that in this thread.
I'm thinking the tooregular un-"Occasional" fog in DXB issues were one of the reasons QF abandoned that port.
