Upgrading with points and earning points in the UK

Hi - on QF is the ability to upgrade using points limited to reward availability?

I have a trip next year HKG-SYD in PE for 4 of us. I would like to upgrade at least one way to J.

I will have 43k of miles from a J trip LHR-SYD in Jan, does anyone have any suggestions on earning the remaining 60K points when in the UK without flying?

Credit cards?

WE went PE to HKG in November and upgraded to J on the return. Put in the request on Saturday and flew on Sunday. Got the upgrade. Points upgrades will be granted in order when any J seat is free. They might keep 1 or 2 for that last minute J customer.

QF upgrades are not like BA's and is not based on award inventory.

You put in an upgrade request and QF processes upgrades based on status.

Credit cards?

Can earn plenty of points without flying ... but might be harder from UK though.

- lots of CCs link to QFF points (but you'll have to pay conversion fees for international use) ... paying for the flights on it helps ... you can also get sign on points on some cards. You may need an Aussie address and proof of income though
- Qantas Travel Money
- Qantas Gift Vouchers
- Some hotel chains will give you QFF points instead of their loyalty points
- Get a Woolworths Everyday Reward cards and get a friend in Aus to buy their groceries every week with it
- Family transfers
and reduce how many you need by buying top up points to get the balance down

Thanks, and whilst I appreciate your post I was sort of looking for more specific help.

I already stooze credit cards and by groceries etc for BA - was hoping for some advice from people who do this in the UK

For example, can I transfer to QF From Amex plat using MR?

Sorry that this is not the specific help that you're still looking for.

But I used QFFF as my primary scheme for about 15 years, because it worked for my flying then despite the fact that I'm UK-based; and the only over-broad headline generalisation I can offer is "forget it".

That's just how QFFF is: not intended for non-Australians. (OK, OK, I know that's an over-broad generalisation, too.)

As my flying patterns changed slightly, I've migrated almost entirely over to BAEC now, as you now.

You cannot from a UK MR account.

As I said, upgrades on QF are very different to BA, they are based on QF status and are processed in the days leading up to the flight.

I assume you have no status on QF, and so you will be at the bottom of the upgrade list. I think your chance of getting an upgrade to J for 4 is basically zero.

Seems an odd system

I guess one world sapphire for two of the travellers and ruby does not help?

Potentially I could get some sort of status before July, I have one return trip in J on QF LHR-SYD and a strong possibility of another

But if realistically upgrades are very unlikely I will continue to put by BA FF on my QF flights and use my credit card send on BA miles

You would need to change the FF number to your QF number to request the upgrade, and the upgrade is based on that Qantas status.

The chance of having availability for four passengers to J at the time your upgrade is processed is low. Qantas also does not fill the cabin with upgrades either.

Like all systems, it has pros and cons. The pros include QF being able to give upgrades even at a fairly late stage before the flight, and the fire-and-forget mechanism from the passenger's point of view (which saves the time needed to check ba.com repeatedly for award availability in the days before the flight).
