QF J Class Seating

Have a SYD-CPT-SYD coming up in J and on one sector the seat map is showing old F Class and upper/lower deck J class for selection(of course I grabbed 1A and 1K:))

I was under the impression that F became J and J became Y+, or am I mistaken?

Does QF block old F class selection to non/low status pax as I note there are still seats in the F section available while a lot of J is also taken?

If you have a 1B seat they are not First Class lie flats, they are Skybeds..

If there is a row 4 then it is Skybed Mk1.

If there is a row 5 then it is Skybed Mk2.

In either case, I'd prefer 3E/F for a couple.

1B is a big clue that it is a new J config and not old F (that would be 1A/1K and not 1B). JNB-SYD requires 744ER due to altitude (at least most months), and all 6 of the 744ERs are converted to new J and no F :)

Do you mean JNB? QF doesn't fly to Cape Town.

There are only 3 744s still in service with the old F seats, and they'll be reconfigured or withdrawn from service shortly. If one of those aircraft is planned for your flight, row 1 is 1A and 1K. Otherwise, row 1 has ABJK and is either Skybed 1 or Skybed 2 as detailed in Serfty's post.

Indeed it is 1A and 1K way back and old J way over(4 rows)Sorry my bad but I did recognize the seat plan 1-2-1 in my original post as old F ;)

So do higher tier pax get first grabs at old F and blocked out to lower status pax?

PS QF seat maps say still 6 744's with old F.

While Qantas does tend to block these seats, quite often with a substitution, many J PAX may not be aware, or simply prefer the upper deck.

Is there any difference with 3AB (Mk1's)?

by 'shortly' you mean in the next year or so? QF is still sellnig F to HKG on these well into next year.

They don't update the aircraft regs listed on those maps very often (or the maps themselves for that matter). All 6 ERs have the new config and the seat map plans on the QF site still show both ER plans.

My understanding of their plan is to reduce the 747 fleet over the next year to 9 aircraft which have the newer 3 class config with A380 style seating. Those 9 747s will be enough to cover JFK, SCL, DFW, JNB and BNE-LAX flights.

I would guess that by the time they have enough A330s to cover the current/planned 744 flights to Asia and FRA, they'll be down to the 9 aircraft they will keep until the rest of the A380s arrive.

With the 787s arriving to JQ from the middle of next year, thus A330s moving back to QF, a number of 747s will be heading to Victorville shortly afterwards.

It looks like by the end of next October, when FRA stops, there will only be the 9 58J/36W/270Y 747s remaining in service.

Simplest difference is that one does not need to climb over the other to access the aisle.
