Some small Changes to QFF

http://www.qantas.com/active

Some member are recieving the monthly statement. On these are notification of changes to QFF from 1st July 2010. To Summarise:
  • 18 months expiry unless activity.
  • Family transfers don't count as activity.
  • Earn points and SCs on Any seat Awards (excluding JQ).
  • Able to upgrade Any Seat awards.

Aus_Mal Dec 11, 2009 11:08 am

I actually think the earn SC's/able to upgrade AnySeat flights is coming sooner than June 2010.

The website is pretty vague though : "Available soon", and I haven't read the written material from Qantas yet.

More ideas copied from NZ.

So spend a lot (and it is normally a LOT) of points on an 'eligible' Any Seat award booking and then get miles and SCs on that award flight?!? Have I got that right?

And do we know yet exactly what "and upgrade on selected Any Seat Awards with Qantas" will mean in practice... it will be upgraded with cash I'm assuming.

Assume this is also pretty clear evidence that Any Seat awards are not proving popular - wonder why that would be :rolleyes:;) - and that QF thus have felt the need to make them more attractive to their FFs.

Yes assume you are right. As Any Seat awards book into basically same fare categories as cash fares (red e deal, super saver, flexi-saver) etc, I imagine points and SC earning at same rates as the cash fares. For QFFers (and Platinums especially) a quick glance at the current cost of Any Seat awards has potential to make them, in some cases, significantly more attractive than classic awards after you deduct the points that will be earnt from the points required for the award.

Not at all - I was assuming that you can upgrade using points for the same fare types that (when currently paid with cash) can be upgraded using points.

I'm going to hazard a guess that AnySeat awards that appear to be available at similar cost to Classic Awards will either disappear, or not be eligible for SCs/points. Only AnySeat awards that book into regular earning classes will be eligble. Those awards appear to be roughly $0.01 = 1 point. So, for a cheap SYD/MEL flight, maybe 15k points, which would then earn 1k points/10 SCs.

QFF Points will now expire after 18 months of account inactivity

From an email I just received. This is the same approach as American Airlines.

Hello XXXX

We've added a range of partners and rewards to the QantasFrequent Flyer program in the past two years giving you more ways than ever to earn and use points.

Next year we're changing the way points expire.

From 1 July 2010:
- Your points won't expire as long as you keep your account active by earning or using points through your account at least once every 18 months, rather than every three years as it is now[1].
- Family transfers won't count towards keeping your account active.

How will this affect the points I have now?

- Any points you have in your account at 30 June 2010 won't be affected by the change to the expiry period and will continue to expire after three years.
- If you don't earn or use any points after 30 June 2010, the points you have earned before 1 July 2010 will expire three years after the date of your last activity.
- If you earn or use points after 30 June 2010, your points will expire either:

a) three years from the date of your last activity before 1 July 2010, or
b) 18 months from the date of your last activity after 30 June 2010,

whichever is later.

In short, if you continue to earn or use points as you do now, your points won't expire.
There's also this:

NEW: Coming soon, earn points and status credits on eligible Any Seat Award flights with Qantas and partner airlines (excluding Jetstar)[4].

4. Available soon on eligible flights on Qantas and partner airlines taken as Any Seat Awards (excluding Jetstar).

If you have an AU/NZ Credit card the 18 month expiry is doesn't matter. But if you live overseas and have years where you fly a lot and then a break, it might be a problem.
Together with the 4 segment rule, which is a joke when you live in Australia, but very tough when you live in Europe, it makes the program much less attractive for us!

As I read the email, this is on a forward looking basis as those of us who earned points prior to July 2010 STILL have a 3 year expiry policy in place for THOSE points.

It's been discussed recently how to do it without visiting Australia. Find a QF codeshare from X (EDI/MAN/AMS/FCO etc etc) -LHR, then fly LHR-BKK or LHR-SIN. 4 sectors easy.

CX's rule is infinitely more restrictive. Miles have to be used within a set period regardless of whether you make further transactions or not.

Personally I don't know why someone would join the QF programme if based in Europe and had no interest going to Australia or at least Asia on QF. Your better off joining an EU based programme with BA usually being the obvious one to pick.

I must admit that I am lucky in having QF linked Australian cards so am able to make transactions should the need arise.

serfty Dec 14, 2009 3:05 pm

Of course, all it takes is one hotel or hire car stay to credit to QFF.

If you know someone with a valid Australian delivery address, then www.homeshop.com.au purchases over $30 will generate point activity.

Ok!

Here's my little secret that l have put some UK & SA friends onto in the past and it works a treat.^
Or at least it has in the past.

For points activity:

Go to the QF OZ website and sign in your memebership as normal.
Click on FF and then to "earning Points" and then click "travel & travel services" then go down the list to "travel books" and click

Click on the "itravelbooks.com.au" link button.

You can then make an online book purchase in any currency and you will recieve 2points per $spent. THERE IS NO MINIMUM SPEND TO EARN QF POINTS

You must add your FF no on the confirm order page.:p

I have seen books as low as $9.95 AUD.;)

I am not aware of any cheaper way to recieve a QF FF points movement.

I am suprised more people inside or outside of OZ are not aware of this.

I have kept this one a secret for some time now.

But in the Chrissy Spirit!;)

Happy season everyone :D

PS. (Hint) A street map of an Oz Capital city is only $9.95+ postage
