LAX-DME is even cheaper....$1769 . Can also get same fares to DME out of NYC & WAS - lots of availability Aug & Dec where I checked.

What's the process like for a US citizen to get a visa to go to Russia?

Seems to be broadly matched now. *A also published out of SFO to practically anywhere in Europe, basis is PQA66SNC with same rules and $1,150 BF plus $1,200 of YQ. (DME YQ is only 906 for some reason - even less ex-LAX).

LED also uses the same Russia schedule. Fewer miles than DME but potentially interesting. Many of the fares also permit free stopovers in Europe, so if you bounce off Russia you can go to most major cities. (This seems to reprice YQ.)

getting Russia visa is very cumbersome. Suggest pay money to get agency do it for you.

you need an invitation letter, they will ask you address, jobs, boss for like last 10 years. Very cumbersome

Any chance this sale will extend into September?

Seems like the cutoff dates out of SFO is 8/20 and the return date is 9/4.

If they extended the dates by at least a week, it would be perfect because I return from a 2 week trip on 8/1 so it would be a fast turnaround to depart again at 8/1.

I would doubt it; that's coded in the seasonality of the fare so "extending" the sale wouldn't change that.
