HU (Hainan): YVR-PEK J $2280USD ai
I just booked one of these fares. It has you going on WestJet to Calgary, and then catching Hainan’s non stop from there To Beijing. I’m not sure about the offerings out of Calgary in J on HU as I can’t find any info about their lounges or any trip reports.
excellent for someone to get more miles and attain status given the bonuses you get for flying a purchased Hainan J with AS MileagePlan. its a good fare, but I sure do miss the days of HU’s LAX-CSX for $1300 ai |

Because if this is out of YVR and in USD, this is not a good deal. 2000 CAD to China is a pretty average price now a days from YVR, cheapest place to get to China from. |
AA fare covers the same city pairs, is cheaper and earns more useful miles no?

Can you back that claim up with some examples? |

I'm not seeing anything under 2500 cdn in business class in the next 6 months from any canadian cities.
Can you back that claim up with some examples? You can also go from eastern Canada (e.g. YYZ) and travel all the way to SE Asia (e.g. BKK) for a little over $2K USD, and the ability to stopover in China. |
I don't do MR's, but from someone who only flies "non-stop" to Asia from Canada for the last thirty years, it's not a great fare, but not a bad one either. I've seen plenty of good reviews for Hainan over the last few years, and if I was flying to China I would most certainly give this five star airline a try.

This is a very good deal considering the mileage bonuses you get with Alaska’s MileagePlan on Hainan, which obviously you don’t know about. Also flying to china with Hainan is always a good experience. |
Currently AA has YYZ-PEK for $1976. Connecting through ORD or DFW, no Westjet economy class involved :)
Edited to add: Sorry, just saw you were talking about YVR. |

And by the way I’ve also mentioned that American Airlines flight out of Vancouver in the YYZ thread. However this fare with HU gets you a 200% bonus with Alaska airlines mileageplan. Also for the record it’s WestJet economy plus that they put you in. Which is boarding first and priority everything. I think other people who are not familiar with Alaska’s mileageplan do not understand the significance of this fare. This is a very great fare to requalify for any Alaska airlines elite levels. |
Thanks for sharing, for HU biz you might want to check your local Chinese TA as usually they have very good HU J bulk fare all year round.

Yes, for this ILRT1CAT fare you will be book R on WS leg and I on HU leg.

thanks for that tip I had not even thought about that. I Just wonder if they will book you into the class that gets out 200% elite qualifying mileage bonus.

I fare on HU will get 100% base EQM and 100% bonus RDM, but an R (biz) fare will get you 200% EQM. I've seen it book into R on LAX-CSX (https://goo.gl/flights/RUsu, ~$2100 USD, 28K EQM on Alaska). I also saw YYZ-PEK on HU in R for $2600 on some dates.

That's a bit presumptuous on your part, don't you think? Also, the other poster had only commented on the price of the fare, and nothing about potential miles earning.
After all, it is a mileage run! |

I don't find any problem with expanding the discussion of pricing to what the EQM earning is on each carrier and fare bucket.
After all, it is a mileage run! I am talking about the tone the original poster comes off as - "obviously you don't know", "do not understand the significance of this fare" - quite presumptuous. Also to consider, not everyone has the same FF membership(s), and the intention of flying can vary; personally, I have flown flights found here in the MR section for leisure, work, and MR! |

No issues with the expansion of discussions, especially considering we are in the MR section of the forum. FT has always been a great community where members contribute and share.

Ok just to clarify, is this a HU "R" fare that earns 200% EQM with AS OR is it an I fare that just earns 100 % AS EQM

I earns the same as R go look at Alaska’s partner chart. AA is only 50%

R earns 100% base + 100% Class of service (COS) bonus. Which = 200% RDM, 200% EQM. I earns 100% base + 0% COS + 100% additional bonus. Which = 200% RDM, 100% EQM. So there is a big difference between R and I fare if you are crediting to Alaska for EQM. |
I thought after December 19th it’s the same, but I see what you mean now.

HU has a few business class (R) fares on Google Flights departing from YYZ in December at $2922 CAD; $2288 USD.
--------------------------------------------------------------------- Best business class fare I've ever seen from YYZ on HU was $1882 CAD to PEK or $1935 CAD to HKG Rtn, but that was way back in Oct 2015. |

I have been looking for January and February time, hence why I am coming up with $2600. I’m looking for after the new year to requalify for Alaska status.

At least one return flight departing in December from YYZ to PEK is cheaper than when I last looked. Through Google Flights. Depart YYZ Dec 3rd and return from PEK on Dec 6th for $2682 CAD; $2111 USD. Took me right through to the booking page at this price. Then when I tried to obtain the same fare again through Google Flights, the fare reverted to $2922 CAD. I've seen other flights in early December at this price on HU. It's not the first time I've seen Hainan play games when it comes to fare searching. I well remember they did the same for their big sale from Toronto a couple of years ago. Before I go, If you haven't noticed, if you're a Fortune Wings Club Member, then you can get an 10% bonus points. Details on their Canada website. https://www.hainanairlines.com/CA/GB/earnbonuspoints |

The one thing you have to realize is the fareThe one thing you have to realize is the fare classes on HU are not really aligned and AS/HU agreement is not up to date based on the current setup that HU has. So there are some great loopholes allowing more credit then you really should get. AS used to have a separate R class earning for J and for F on HU. AS could not make different earnings on the same fare class work so they were extra nice and left R as a F fare even though its now discount J.
I have the info in the AS wiki from the beginning of time to watch fare buckets. For instance the lowest fare may book into a higher earning fare class than a higher level. Its only R on certain markets. Same kind of dealings with coach as well, for example many markets the cheapest fares are Q and earn 50% in AS while a more expensive fare on same flight is E and only earns 25%. classes on HU are not really aligned. I wonder if AS would make an exception and give you an elite qualifying bonus considering it is a higher fare than R?

In western Canada, I only see this fare now when departing from either YEG, YXE or YWG and connecting at YYC to PEK. $2526 CAD; $1961 USD.
