Whoa, has anybody noticed AS's new bonus rate for EK premium cabin fares? https://www.alaskaair.com/content/mi.../emirates.aspx

I have AS MVP Gold, so I believe this flight would net 50k miles, if my math is correct?

hevernan Dec 25, 2016 3:51 am

this is a real good deal! You can get 5 First segments ( 777 / 380 ) for 332 USD per segment, can travel 12.652 miles and the average duration of all first segments is 5h30m

alpenrock Dec 25, 2016 4:38 am

to get Alaska Gold do I have to fly anything with Alaska or Just park my miles will get me to Gold in

onlysuites Dec 25, 2016 5:24 am

Nice find OP.

maxvor Dec 25, 2016 7:20 am

Why limit yourself? Go as far as CHC or AKL and earn 45000 tier points (5K short of Skywards Gold) or more than 70K AS miles (more than 90K if you have higher tier status). All for less than 4K EUR.
But if you ask me, CAI always was a cheap origin for premium fares and this year we definitely saw better offers on this routes. Positioning to CAI might also not be a piece of cake for some of us. Unless you fly EK so often and therefore value the status with them, you could wait for a better offer.

I understand from Lucky's blog that you don't have to fly a single mile on
Alaska metal in order to earn status with them, however, you do need more miles when using partner airlines to reach each status level.

Quote from Lucky's blog, near top of the article:

As you can see, there are different requirements depending on whether you’re qualifying exclusively through travel on Alaska, or also through travel on their partner airlines. One of the best things about Alaska is the unique partner airlines they have, and how you can qualify for status with them exclusively through partner airline travel, if you want to.
Even better, if you do have top level status with any of the North American airlines, you can match to MVP Gold 75K.

I am currently re-thinking my FFP participation and might use Emirates to shuttle between Europe and Asia in 2017 instead of flying Star Alliance carriers.
That way, I can collect a ton of miles via Alaska MP to use for reward flights for friends & family the following year, after earning in 2017.

Check out Lucky's blog for more information on how to take advantage of ex-CAI Emirates fares, status matching to Alaska Mileage Plan MVP Gold 75K etc.

Ah yes. The £1771 is in sterling, also known as GBP or UKP: or, simply, pounds or quid. It's the currency used in the United Kingdom - an once important nation currently falling off the edge of Europe.

You can buy one of these sterlings for 123 US cents. So you'll need around $2200 US dollars to buy something priced at £1771.

How many miles would I get if I put Alaskan airlines membership number?

I haven't flown or collected any Emirates miles, whether in their own Skywards program or Alaska Mileage Plan, so cannot guarantee that my below calculation is correct.
Maybe other forum members can comment if it is indeed correct.

FYI, I am currently looking into maybe switching to either programs to be able to get max. mileage for award ticket redemption.

Earning on Emirates

Base miles earned and class of service bonuses on Emirates count toward Alaska Airlines elite status.

Considering your given routing, I would say you should earn the following with Alaska Mileage Plan program (mileage via Great Circle Mapper)

http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=CAI-DXB...KK-HKG-DXB-CAI

CAI-DXB-HND 6443 x 1.5 x 2.0 = 22.550 miles

BKK-HKG-DXB-CAI 6237 x 1.5 x 2.0 = 21.830 miles
_____________________________________________
total = 44.380 miles

Make sure to read the small print!

Qualify for mileage accrual

Flights must fall within the eligible flight number range below, and your flight must be marketed and operated by Emirates. Ticket has to be on Emirates ticket stock to qualify.

Eligible flight numbers

001–978

To ensure flight credit, the two letter airline code (EK) must precede the flight number (for example, EK XXXX) on your ticket receipt or boarding pass.

Mileage earned is based on a percentage of actual flight miles flown, with 500 minimum miles on flights shorter than 500 miles. No miles will be earned for classes of service not listed above.

Thank you for posting the information above. I am considering switching to Alaska, but I haven't flown with them yet. So my calculations may be wrong. I believe it's base miles * (1+.5+2) = 3.5* base miles. Please correct me if I am mistaken.

Agreed! Lets play a game to see who can come up with the longest route.

Bonus points for a380 flights. I'm looking at mid February still in the 1800 GBP / 2000 Euro / 2200 USD (+-300) range in FIRST as the target.

I can do the same but with a little less mileage more a380 time.

CAI-DXB-PEK or ICN or SIN and all have a380 on the DXB-whatever leg (watch ICN as it only gets a380 a couple days a week) but are only 5XXX-5700 Miles but that is 1 - a380 Leg

then the return for the same

BKK-HKG-DXB-CAI around 6237 ( a380 on BKK-HKG-DXB legs) 2 - A380 Legs

So a few less miles but I don't think you can get the a380 to HND or NRT so for the extra 1000 miles might be worth a different route.

Any challengers? How much value would you put on the a380 instead of 777? Having flown both I do like the bar on longer trips, as at least you get up and move around a bit, plus the cognac is really nice.

Hello:) , this is my very first post - I am a bit nervous, but I hope I will be welcomed! :)

I'm very interested in the fare as I have a plan to visit Japan in April.

May I ask you guys a questions?

Do you all live in Cairo?
Or Do you buy separate air tickets to Cairo?

I'm very curious - doesn't it cost money/energy/time if you have to travel to Cairo first??

I live in a small town in Northern Europe, so it's a bit expensive and takes time (+10hours!) to fly down there.
Humm.

im also based in Northern Europe the thing is that you need to balance the costs versus benefit if I took KLM/Lufthansa for a similar route (even direct from AMS/FRA) I would be hard pressed to find a flight even in business class for this price. Most of Europe is a 3-4 hour flight from CAI depending on the connection etc, so for me it's important to factor that in when deciding if this deal is good for you.

Dont forget a lot of the guys/gals on FT are a little crazy so sometimes the great deals found here are useless for a normal vacation, but great for earning miles which could be used for that "dream" vacation. For me it's worth it.

slylust Dec 27, 2016 1:01 pm

does travelling to cairo from the US and then getting on a connecting flight require a visa? or can you directly go to your connecting flight

helvetic Dec 27, 2016 1:28 pm

I almost went ahead with this (one-way for $1300 ish instead of RT) but getting to CAI was an issue. There's only one nonstop to CAI from GVA on MS; and it gets in right after midnight. Since CAI transit doesn't let you leave the airport without a visa, I'd have been stuck on the terminal floor all night. No thanks.

You're allowed to leave the airport if your transit time is > 6 hours.

You're allowed to leave the airport, of course.

You can try telling the immigration police you don't need a visa, but ...... be prepared to buy a visa :D.

At the end of the day it's the easiest thing in the world to do, and costs but $25. And really, it's not the best idea to get into an argument about what Timatic says with the immigration police. But by all means try, and report back.

There are apocryphal tales about visa free entry. While this might work if MS is arranging things (the airline has muscle!), immigration officers are going to send you to buy a visa from the bank counters.

I call that a pretty wise decision. Positioning from Europe is likely to include at least one overnight stop, adding to the ticket price four or five hundred euros, as well as a measure of inconvenience. Really it's only fun if you want to include a few days in Egypt, or if you need to be in Cairo anyway.

Welcome to Flyertalk!

I am sure you have browsed the forums a bit and have gotten familiar with how FT (=FlyerTalk) works. Most people start by lurking around the different forums and try to pick up on the lingo and different topics, which does take some time to get familiar with, especially for people (like myself) with English as a second language.

Now to your questions.....

Do you all live in Cairo? Don't think any of the people that are considering to take advantage of the great business & first class fares live in Cairo, most take a flight to position to/from Cairo to take advantage of these fares.

I am based in Singapore and I am thinking about routing my January flight from Frankfurt through Cairo to Singapore instead of going straight from Frankfurt ("home" airport when I am back in Germany) to Singapore.

I could then return to Cairo in say March and take another business or first class flight to another Asian/North or South American or Australian destination.

To sum it up, one could go Cairo - Dubai - Singapore return, then immediately take another flight from Cairo - Dubai - Buenos Aires/New York/ Toronto etc. for work/vacation etc.
To return to my Singapore base, I'd have to buy another CAI-DXB-SIN ticket.
Hope you get the picture.

One would need to commit more time to do the above scenario, rather than take a direct flight (if applicable) however, since all flights would be in business or first class, come at a relatively small price compared to doing the same from other airports around the world.
By taking flights in business or first class, one can accumulate a decent amount of redeemable miles, which then can be used for further free flights for yourself or family & friends.

Or Do you buy separate air tickets to Cairo? Yes, people buy a separate ticket or if a revenue ticket is too expensive, they would go and use their miles & points to get a "free" ticket to Cairo.

I'm very curious - doesn't it cost money/energy/time if you have to travel to Cairo first?? Sure does :) But since you are flying business or first class from Cairo onwards, it is something a lot of the FT members are willing to do or go through. As other forum members have mentioned, the people who post on FT aren't necessarily a good benchmark for questions like "Does this makes sense to do?" ;)

I live in a small town in Northern Europe, so it's a bit expensive and takes time (+10hours!) to fly down there.
Humm.
It sure does take time, effort and also quite a bit of money, but it sure gets you to new places like Cairo and the Middle East, that otherwise you likely wouldn't experience (also part of why I am considering to do this, haven't spend any time in Cairo or the Middle East).
