Dragnet for fake ID's. Do we have a war on underage drinking?

Mission Creep

Don't suggest it. That'll be the next mission for TSA.

1984 has arrived. Job well done. You caught a guy with a fake ID, but nothing about whether he was a threat to airline safety. Yes is no, black is white, bad is good. TSA is only for our safety.

I don't know...this whole scene from the BDOs sounds a lot like the spaghetti stuffed with bicarbonate of soda that Otis B Driftwood mentioned in A Night at the Opera - it causes and cures indigestion at the same time

You might want to re-read the article... the only reason the police officer grabbed this guy is because the BDO yelled "breach"

apologies on my part (and penalty box for me) as i read it as it was the pax yelling "breach" to create a diversion (tho he still gets the dumba$$ award by running towards security)

Wouldn't this same guy have been caught for "breachinig security" by a regular TDC? What difference does it make that there were BDOs involved?

And that's putting aside that all the guy did was have a fake ID, not actually anything that was a security risk.

This whole Bad ID Ban is often referred to as revenue protection for airlines. I'm beginning to think it is revenue enhancement for Greyhound. The largest group majorly affected (as in actually changing their life styles, not just counting the time wasted and the constitutional/civil rights violations for 2 million pax per day ;)) are illegal immigrants with no documents. They can no longer fly domestic and will have to take the bus. This will cause airlines to lose revenue from good cash paying customers. Good work TSA. :td:

Does TSA (still?) accept Matricula Consular cards as ID at the checkpoint under the May 08 ID rules? If so, then there's no reason (other than fear of interacting with the US govt) why illegals can't fly.

As for the BDO "stopping" a security breach, I give much more credit to the off-duty LEO who actually detained the guy. "Discovering" the guy's bad ID did nothing to enhance security or avoid inconvenience for other travelers. Stopping him once he started running toward the sterile area did.

So if this guy turns out to be one of Bin Laden's cronies, what will your remarks be? Still doesn't matter because they (the mean ole TSA) should not be checking IDs?

None of you know why this guy has multiple ID's, nor why he decided to run when they found out he was trying to pass as somene else.

A simple case of a fake ID to buy some beer such as McLovin (from the movie Superbad)? Maybe. Someone trying to hide their identity for more significant reasons? also a possibility.

I would at least wait for the follow-up story of who this moron is before making all the normal assumptions this forum is full of.

Correct. Bin Laden has few cronies. No one should have to lose their civil liberties due to irrational fears like this one. Furthermore, if TSA actually checked for guns and bombs instead of harassing the traveling public, it would matter if Osama himself showed up at the airport.

Nor do we care.

The fact that he didn't want to talk to TSA puts him far above 'moron' status.

Criminals and/or those with multiple/fake IDs walk down the street in the USA every day. But we've made a cultural choice that police don't set up dragnets on the sidewalk to catch them. Would we be "safer" if they were caught? Maybe. But the lost liberty is too much.

If the guy turns out to be Bin Laden's crony, my response would be that US intelligence and law-enforcement should have known about him and law-enforcement should have executed a specific, targeted arrest warrant, based on probable cause, to bring him in. Not waited for him to show up at the airport and fumble an interview about his ID.

Turning domestic transportation points into law-enforcement dragnets is a dangerous precedent.

no offense, but do you think you're actually going to change anyone's opinion by posting this kind of stuff?

the point that many people are making is that even if it were osama bin laden himself, if he were properly screened, he would present no risk to the plane.

then of course, there's all the other ID issues, such as why would osama bin laden's number 2 present ID declaring himself as such? or why wouldn't he book the ticket under a different name, then use a fake boarding pass to get thru security, so that his name was never matched against the no-fly list?

Yes, idiots, post a picture of the guy's stolen ID and info so the poor sap he dupped can get dupped again.

What follow-up story ? Unless he really is another A-Q "number 2" or 3 or whatever, we will never hear another thing from the TSA. Since he hasn't been named, it will be hard to find court proceedings as well.

Perhaps you will keep tabs and report back for us ?

You understimate bin Laden's cronies.

You're not the first.
