I don't know about y'all but I really don't like taking my shoes off for the TSA. All those bare and socked feet that go through there is just gross. So I'm waiting in line to get felt up and look down and the guy ahead of me is wearing the feet scrubs that the drs and nurses in ORs wear. I think that this was a novelle idea and he didn't get gruff by TSA going through. I'm not sure if this has been mentioned but thought I'd share what I saw this morning.

Some airports offer them at checkpoints too. Ive seen them at PHX along with a bin full of ziplock baggies for folks who forgot them.

Yup..seen em at DCA as well.

IslandBased Apr 11, 2008 3:03 pm

What is the TSA policy on bunny slippers?

Spiff Apr 11, 2008 3:34 pm

This is so stupid. No one should have to remove their shoes!

The TSA should be permanently destroyed for this and all their other stupid, un-American nonsense. Its "leaders" should be caned and terminated. They are filth.

Yup- which is part of the reason I like flying from PHX. I get new scrub booties and new baggies each time I go through. None of the other airports have ever complained about my booties. I like them because I usually wear flipflops everywhere and bare feet + floor= gross

rhiannonwales Apr 11, 2008 7:07 pm

PHX is nice, but i've found thier TSA people to be nastier than normal - i went through there back in January and forgot to take out my cell phone from my pocket and it beeped and the guy was less than nice about it. But, it was Superbowl weekend (thank god i was leaving, lol) so maybe it was just super stressful times.

bzbdewd Apr 11, 2008 8:34 pm

somewhere in a thread way back when there was someone who had these but was made to take them off.... can't remember the details tho....

You were there at PHX during Super Bowl weekend? I didn't even know that you went to PHX due to high volume passengers were trying go home from the games. I have been very extremely busy at Pizza Hut due to Super Bowl weekend. I have noticed that I saw lot of those people are waiting for the planes is heading back to JFK, ATL, BOS. I saw lot of people were trying to get through checkpoint but, other flight has been delayed due to weather at PHX that day. I do slighty remember when I was at work all morning until 1pm.

rhiannonwales Apr 12, 2008 7:53 am

Yeah unfortuently i had no choice in the matter - i work for a non profit and we were working the Phoenix Comicon right before the Superbowl. Since i was flying to EWR and the Giants were in the Bowl there was a lot of people from the NY/NJ area coming and going that weekend.

You might be thinking of this incident last fall? Therein, Canarsie was ordered to remove and toss his booties after he passed the WTMD but before he was allowed to collect his screened shoes. (Fortunately, a supervisor overrode the initial screener's directive, although Canarsie got a retaliatory secondary in the bargain.)

I just don't get it. HKG, FRA, PEK, TLV, etc-- no shoe removal and flights to the USA are ok. Originate here and you have to take off you shoes. So stupid.

Wow, lots of valid content in that. I think the thread here was about alternatives to go through security not whether taking shoes off is stupid or un-American or whether or not TSA management should be caned (because you know, caning is not un-American at all ). There are plenty of threads on here about whether or not there is a point to taking your shoes off. Perhaps, you'd do better to actually post in those threads.

"All those bare and socked feet that go through there is just gross."

You can wear whatever kind of material you want going through there as long as you take off your shoes. That said, I don't recall a single post on here ever about people catching any kind of communicable disease from going through there. Do you think that the bathtub of the hotel you're staying in is always completely disinfected before you get there? Do you whatever makes you feel comfortable, but your health isn't at risk here.

In what state do you have a license to practice medicine?

Keeping my shoes on makes me feel comfortable. Possibly the TSA feels likewise, or they would make their employees go shoe-less at the checkpoints as well. They're inside, in a clean area. Why do they need shoes

If you're a diabetic with open wounds on your feet and don't know that you can refuse to remove your shoes or you give into the pressure to remove their shoes, your health can be very much at risk.

Seems to me you have made statements before about there being no health issues from the floors at checkpoints and, if you've chosen to read the responses to your comments, you would know that there are, indeed, health issues.

Find posts from the poster who is an EMT and the links to articles that relate the different bacteria, etc. that have been found on the floors at checkpoints and then come back to us and say there is no health issue. @:-)

Gosh darn, it must be tough being perfect. :p

Oh, he's not in any danger of THAT...

birdstrike Apr 13, 2008 6:16 pm

I have heard mention of people putting on a second pair of old socks over the first pair, then removing and disposing of them after passing through the WTMD.

Plastic bags are your friend ... they're for more than just your LGAs! :)

And they cost, what? About 4 cents each? A couple cents more for rubber bands to slip around your ankles to hold them in place?

If you're really concerned about germs, there's your solution ... for a quarter or less ...

However, if you just want to P&M about the big, bad TSA ... well, carry on, I guess!

Doober

that was me that posted info about a set of booties I had tested and came up with some interesting findings (Items founded included MRSA, VRE, Fecal Coliform, C-Diff, and a few other nasty ones). I need to go find that report that said all that was cultured. Funny one is when i sent a email to the blog about it, i never got a response and has been deleted every time i ask. Whats wrong TSA got something to hide:mad:.

oneofthosepeopleyouloveto hate - well why should i have to go through all of that when you agency says they will provide booties for me according to signage at checkpoints and online. To bad the health and hygiene standards for checkpoints are atrocious and allow for these type of bacteria to have a environment to live and breed, and endangering the lives of travelers with compromised immune and body systems, which can lead to serious infections, amputations or even septic shock that could end in death.

BTW Doober not that it means much but Im a paramedic, two levels above a EMT in training, it goes EMT, EMT Intermediate, then Paramedic (Or EMT-P/EMT-Paramedic depending on who you ask). Basically I know how to use all the cool tools in a ambulance, just a FYI.

Sorry, but I tried that at SEA. I had picked up the booties in PHX and used them in other airports with no problems, but when I used them in SEA, I was told to discard them immediately after clearing the WMD (and before getting my shoes).
So then I tried plastic bags with rubber bands, as you suggested. Same thing - I was told to take them off and dispose of them as soon as I cleared WMD, before retrieving my shoes.
So now I put on a pair of socks (over my regular socks, if I'm wearing closed shoes). I take them back off after clearing WMD and retrieving my shoes.

So, with all due respect, if you just want to P&M about us big, bad travellers (who are just trying to abide by the constantly changing and reinterpreted rules)....well, carry on, I guess!

Or, HERE'S a radical thought! You could use PROVEN EXISTING TECHNOLOGIES to screen shoes WHILE THEY'RE STILL ON THE PASSENGER'S FEET!!!

Whoa, what a concept! And for ZERO additional cost or health risk to the passengers, to boot!

Sorry about the downgrade, Scubatooth. I'd tried to do a search for your post but couldn't find it. Interesting that you've posted it a couple of times on the blog and it still doesn't come up.

Have you tried submitting your info - in whatever the subject du jour is, i.e.:

http://www.tsa.gov/blog/2008/04/pass...ngers-got.html

and daring them to print it?
