SNL Lampoons TSA

Hope somebody gets the video posted somewhere, but the new SNL season kicked off with them nailing TSA. Good to see when they even start making fun of the really goofy "security" procedures. Maybe people outside of the frequent traveller will start to see the silliness.

I just watched the SNL skit. What a riot!! ^ ^ :D Very funny and probably not far from the truth.

I especially loved Maya Rudolphs character asking why our nuclear power plants aren't protected. And the supervisor's response saying to keep the questions about airplanes.

justageek Sep 30, 2006 10:47 pm

Please, someone post here if they can find it on YouTube or elsewhere. Would love to see it.

Sounds to me like Hawley and Chertoff may have finally jerked the public around one too many times. I guess FlyerTalk is just very avant garde in that we've been lampooning the TSA for a long time.

Very close to the truth.

A lot of the items brought up on FT made their way into the skit.

Someone will probably put it up on YouTube by Monday.

Since it was part of the sketch, I'm am curious if you have a turkey sandwich with more than 3 oz. of mustard on it, will it be allowed? I was wondering if writing on the baggies was going to show up but it didn't.

The last thing I want is to derail the thread but just as a point of reference nuclear plants are very well protected both inside and out. I worked at one a visited several between '82 and '98. From a nuclear safety standpoint I would have no problem building my house right next to one. From a terrorist standpoint almost anything else is an easier target.

Travellin' Fool Oct 1, 2006 9:55 am

So what if my partner and i both bring on 3 ounces then we'd have six ounces...

GUWonder Oct 1, 2006 10:45 am

They need to put a skit on about what happens at the checkpoints. A lot of fun that can be made of the TSA and of passengers. :)

To clarify the SNL skit. They said chemical plants and not nuclear plants.

SlowTrekker Oct 1, 2006 10:52 am

Who knew? The TSA has a sense of humor. I bring you:

drifting OT, sorry, but load up a piper cub with explosives and ram the nuclear plant. Just a variation on the car bomb technique which they use so effectively in the Middle East.

That's why the TSA spokesperson on SNL wanted to avoid those questions and focus on how xraying shoes can blocking 4 oz toothpaste tubes makes us safer.

Did they say "think of the children" on the SNL skit?

Think Oklahoma City and then substitute a small plane for a truck. Voila!

Back to topic: Perhaps we should write SNL/NBC and tell them how much we enjoyed the sketch (that I have yet to see) and ask them to do one on TSA checkpoints.

Is this up on YouTube yet?

Won't be effective. a few hunderd pounds of explosive won't make a dent in the containment building.

That would be a hoot! Reminiscent of the David Spade & Helen Hunt flight attendant BUH BYE skit!!

Yes. It could be amusing to have actual video footage of a TSA checkpoint and add in voice-overs and "thought bubbles".

"Officer, you forgot to check my underwear. You know, I want to be safe." :D

Don't bank on that. Also, this doesn't even begin to touch the number of nuclear reactors that are housed, pretty much totally unprotected (or protected by horny morons, as ABC News demonstrated) at various Universities all across our great land. At the very least, they make great dirty bombs to spread a layer of radioactive contaminant on their neighboring college towns, at worse, someone could cause one to totally melt down.

This is tougher than it sounds. You could pretty easily wreck one of these test reactors, but spreading contamination or causing a meltdown are tough - especially the latter. You would need to disable a bunch of safety mechanisms, then shim out the rods. Even then, most of the research reactors are so small, a meltdown wouldnt do much. You really need a big reactor and a lot of technical know-how to make attacking a nuke plant worthwhile, and most college reactors just dont qualify. And forget stealing the fuel or expended fuel for use in a weapon - removing spent fuel without killing yourself takes specially equipment and a couple of weeks of time.

LNG terminal....now that is a much different story. Those things scare the heck out of me. Or an oil refinery.

IIRC, I believe the phrase was "self-protecting".

this skit put just about all of my thoughts into focus....

And thats why I just keep laughing so hard....

susiesan Oct 2, 2006 12:59 pm

let's all forward to TSA/DHS

Perhaps if thousands of us forward the link to this video to the TSA and DHS and they would actually watch it, they might realize how silly and useless all ofthis is and how bizarre the US seems in the eyes of the rest of the world.

The fact that someone found it funny enough to post it onto YouTube says something about what the public feels.

I'm sure it's making the rounds around DHS right now.

I've already sent it up to my management staff.

Good to see TSA front liners are gathering intel.

YOU GUYS ARE THE FRONT LINE!

TSASuper Oct 3, 2006 3:42 pm

I'm sure most TSAers find all this to be just as silly as the passengers do. But the TSAer have to make a living.

I always enjoy a good parody. I don't take offense to it. I showed this to my entire staff. They all thought it was hilarious. Personally, I hope to see more.
