Flight crews traveling as pax bringing drinks on board?

I am aware that many flight crews are exempt from the liquid ban, but I assumed this was only while on duty. Are they exempt while traveling as passengers too? I was on an AA flight from SDF-ORD today when a UPS pilot (in uniform) boarded with a cup of Starbucks coffee in hand. After chatting with the crew he took his seat and nobody said a word. Shouldn't they have to follow the same rules as pax while traveling as pax??
