TSA Overpaid (insert witty comment here)

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/trib.../s_405315.html

The top 10 TSA managers based at the Findlay airport earn an average of nearly $20,000 more than Pittsburgh-area workers in similar positions at private companies, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review analysis of TSA salaries with U.S. Department of Labor data. One employee, Dale Palmer, a training manager, is paid $48,000 more than the local average for training managers in private industry.
Other than the shoe carnival I've not had problems with Pittsburgh TSA, but they are SOOO not worth it. Gimme back my money!

Interesting that government actually pays better than private industry for once. I don't have a problem with paying above average though as long as it's not grossly above average. And of course, the more you make, like at the FSD level, the more accountability there should be.

And if they're making $140k+ to run the shoe carnival, maybe I should be a shoe carnie. :D

The FSD at each airport hires their screening managers. I believe they were given a 2 year contract to begin with and then they re-negotiated from there.

Government pay is all out of whack. Check out these locality pay tables: http://www.opm.gov/oca/05tables/pdf/saltbl.pdf

The base GS salaries in Houston are more than they are in New York or Los Angeles. Why do I think W had something to do with that?

There are premium pay scales on top of that, based on your field and experience. They don't have locality pay though ... it's all base pay.

Scale I'm on pays about 10k a year better at each point.

Some agencies are ditching the GS scales to go to more of a pay for performance plan. Some agencies are already testing it out, and we're supposedly supposed to be going to it in the next year or so.

It doesn't surprise me at all that management gets the lion's share.

TSA has been very top-heavy from the word Go. Their wastefulness is legendary.

Wow.

Sounds like your tune is changing on TSA.

Yeah, once you get above the uniforms it's disgusting how much TSA employees get paid - especially considering how little work they do and how few qualifications they have.

I tell ya, this job has made a libertarian out of me!

Again, I call 'em as I see 'em.

Why would it be surprising that FSD's and their staff are getting paid ridiculous amounts of money while screeners, who get the short end of the stick anyway, are at the bottom of the pay scale.

Screeners GET PAID???!!!???

OMG!!!

Next you'll tell me it's with taxpayer money or something!

Actually, they base it off of the types of federal employees, and number of - so if an area has a large presence of well paid federal employees, the entire region gets bumped up - ergo, NASA...

My memory is fuzzy, so I'll try to be more precise, but there's a strange metric involved...
