Say, Adolph and Pol haven't gotten much use in the past few years...

This is an interesting question though. My wife started wondering when I mentioned this thread as we hope to have a kid in the next year too.

I play cards with a guy named Osama. I don't know him well enough to ask him if he gets flagged for SS when he flies, but I'm guessing that he gets "randomly" selected everytime he flies.

Just don't name the kid Mohammad and he should be ok. If a girl, I'd opt not to call her Madonna.

Oh an d you need to change it every 6 months, and the new name cannot be one used in the past 4 years

My father's name was Adolph. He was in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Most people just called him Dutch :)

"When naming our children years and years ago we gave final consideration to how it would look on corporate letterhead. How sick is that?"

That is not sick at all. I just helped a friend pick a baby name, and that is one thing I considered. "Buffy" and "Muffy" are OK for cheerleaders, gymnasts, and actresses, but not a Fortune 500 president.

"Perhaps this explains why US friends recently named their son Maz. They said it's a common name in NZ where they recently vacationed."

It is also the nickname for Mazin, an Arabic name used by Palestinians.

I guess we all agree that naming baby "Marx Lenin Infidel Hunter Jihad Jones, Jr." might just might cause notice by the Boarding Pass Inspector? Nah, probably not. . .

Is there a way to check with the TSA or DHS to see if any of the names we are considering (along with our last name) will cause problems?

It's a shame that our country has come to this, but even if we really fell in love with a particular baby name, we’d decide on something else if we knew it would cause airport harassment for us and for our child.

Name your child what you want to name it and pay no mind to the lists. First off the lists are not public information. You have no way to know who is on them. I saw one once and it was huge. It contained even names of people that are employees of companies that are known to have questionable business tactics with their funds. You dont want to saddle your child with some name that may not be pleasant to them because of what you perceived as a threat. Children under 12 are not subject to the SSSS anymore and so that is not an issue. You are right though that there is no age information on the data that is put in the ticketing computer therefore John Smith age 40 is on the list so is John Smith age 3mo. The sceure flight program should alleviate this though.

In the spirit of this thread, I'd consider naming him or her "ImwithParanoid"

If you really think I'm paranoid for considering potential TSA harassment in naming the child, read this article:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8705746/

How would you like to have one of those names?

venice4504 Aug 12, 2005 11:06 am

I don't think that you are being paranoid, just cautious. Who knows what the list will contain by the time that your child is old enough to be searched. I would assume (and we all know what happens when you do that) that soon we will all be fingerprinted and eye scaned and submit bodily fluids for steroid testing every time we go to the airport. Give him/her something that she'll be proud of...not Moon Unit or Dweezil.

No doubt somewhere, someone of Asian background is named Noh Way.

When the Man with Badge says "Tell me your name", . . .

How about something like:

Francis Ulysses Thomas Scott Andrew (your last name) - FUTSA :D

or if its a girl:

Farrah Ursula Theresa Sarah Amy (your last name)

PresRDC Aug 15, 2005 1:23 pm

Is your last name Qaeda?

If so, I wouldn't name your son Albert or your daughter Alberta!

;) :D
