Right grouse. I found that thread (and post) after replying to her here. After reading through her comments, I realized what I was dealing with. Oh well, I get suckered every once in a while.

Such a regulation is specifically listed in the American Way magazine on AA.

And apparently Ryanair has a similar policy:

On AA, you can't take pictures of airline personnel. There is nothing preventing you from taking pictures out the window or of the other passengers. You may get some friction if someone does not want to be photographed, though. If you and a friend or two were traveling together, you could take pictures of each other and probably the FA would be happy to take a picture of all/both of you.

I just looked it up in American Way: "Photography or video recording of airline personnel, equipment, or procedures is strictly prohibited". Seems like a picture similar to that from the Ryan plane would be prohibited on AA as well.

I wonder how far AA can go with this? Am I allowed to take a picture of an AA plane from inside the terminal?

Probably this is to prevent people from taking pictures of the cockpit. Once you're on the plane, you're subject to AA's rules. You probably won't be arrested but you might be asked to leave. In the terminal, you can pretty much do what you want. If you're not flying AA that day, there's really nothing AA can do about it.
