nested luggage, is it suspicious?

I was told recently not to nest luggage inside. We plan to buy some things. We're going to Japan flying from Toronto through LA. Was told that nesting luggage inside is considered suspicious? I don't see any reason that would be.

I do not see why it would be suspicious. A friend did it multiple times between the US and UK.

My family has traveled internationally with nested luggage dozens of times over the past 15 years, shuffling gifts and gear to friends and relatives in other countries, or bringing it back. Almost every time in fact. That also includes checking totally empty suitcases on occasion. Never had an issue. Granted, this was mostly flying on UA in the western hemisphere.

Who told you this?

We have nested luggage many times when the outbound trip requires more luggage (gifts for family) than the return trip. Never had an issue.

I've done this a number of times over the years, and am in fact doing it again today. Never had a problem.
Now, if the inside piece of luggage was lead shielded ... 😅

Have done this multiple times albeit only on international flights (Europe, UK, Americas, Asia), always without issue. Granted, the scrutiny on the US Customs side was with both pieces in use as that was the point, but the inbound countries didnt raise an eyebrow. Having seen what an extra suitcase costs when youre in OS mode packing for your return home, I recommend the strategy. (If you've got trains on your itinerary, however, keep it small and light and bring memories and photos home instead.) Good luck!
