I think a better answer is, if cell phones and other devices were dangerous, no pilot would take a plane in the air.

Exactly. If they're not going to enforce the cell phone rule, then the consequences obviously won't be that great (if it was on)

"Gadgets on Planes"

I'm sure this article has been linked and discussed somewhere on this forum today, but I can't find it.

I took especial notice that flight attendants are now referring to themselves as "first responders"
.... is there anyone left in the US now who isn't?

Maybe if they responded first to customer service needs, taking a plane ride wouldn't be such a bad experience these days.

I think I've said this before, but to say that the FA's role is primarily about safety is kind of like saying that, since babies are occasionally born in taxis, that cabdrivers are primarily EMTs.

"Kirchoff has heard of similar anecdotes, although the Boeing scientist and his colleagues have never corroborated these reports. But he still supports the FAA rule."

I suspect Boeing executives will be surprised, if not enraged, to discover that one of their employees says their planes are affected by portable electronic devices. Perhaps they cause lithium batteries to catch fire.

It was only a matter of time until someone replied with such an ignorant response...but regardless, you only can use that argument if there is a true emergency. Checking your e-mail or talking to someone in general is not an emergency for the five minutes during take-off or landing. Alec Baldwin certainly didn't have an emergency to play Words with Friends.

Keep up with the insults; they only diminish you.

So why is it acceptable to use a cell phone during an emergency?
