Then, with my hands already full, I'd have to try and juggle bins to make sure that my laptop goes in one, my jacket, shoes and kippie bag go in another, and that nothing hits the ground at 9.8m/s^2.

That is a recipe for dropping something expensive, like my laptop, on the floor and doing it irreparable harm.

Okay... To each their own - you do it your way, I'll do it mine. I only described my anal process which has been fine for me for years; I didn't suggest anyone else do the same. My only point in delineating my particular process was to indicate I am prepared and could use the expert line but don't due to non-experts.

Miami does the same thing- and apparently expert travellers are also those travelling with two strollers...

We travel with two strollers all the time. Also, two kids to go with them. Strollers are folded up and ready to go through the machine by the time we get there. We easily move faster than 90% of the people in line.

RDU Terminal 2 has a "expert traveller" line. It's usually self selecting, but sometimes there is a TSO directing folks to the various lines. I only fly for business and I look the part (tie, jacket, etc.) so I always get to use it. Not sure it makes any difference. :)

Terminal 1 has an "expert" line too, but all the lines usually feed to one TDC.

I'll know better when I fly out of T2 on Saturday.

That is great Mike- unfortunately not all travellers are so good- and waiting for someone who attempts to push their stroller through the metal dector- and then complains they will have to wake their children up- I know this is not you, but it has happend to me 3 times in the last 3 months at Miami in the "expert" lane for international departures (area J).

Yeah, that would tick me off, also. If the kids aren't ready to move, we aren't in the fast lane.

The irony, of course, is that the "family" lane at Boston is empty half the time because people are afraid of getting stuck behind families.

We're pretty practical-whatever line is shortest usually gets our business.

I am the same as you! And I really appreciate families that travel well- was on SIN/MUC the other night in F, and the family sitting across from me had a very small child that was absolutely perfect (and silent for 12.5 hours!).

I look at whatever line is moving the fastest, and sometimes that's the 'family' line because it's completely empty. I also look to see where the WBIs are, and try to avoid those.

My goal is not always to get through the line in the minimal amount of time. Sometimes it's to get through the line that's the least intrusive.

I appreciate that you're not one of the people who has to dig through their bag for each individual liquid container, or spends ten minutes trying to find their ID and boarding pass at the document smurf, but I will admit that I get frustrated sometimes when a person juggling all their stuff and unable to hold on to all of it is toe-tapping behind me because i'm getting my laptop out on the table. I don't mind if they go around, since I'm just trying to apply safety and security to my belongings. :)

I used to look for the shortest or fastest moving line, and would opt for the expert traveller line most of the time.

Based on casual observation, I think that more locations route that line to the AITs, or have them working on that line, than the line that IS marked families, which often is only using the WTMD.

YMMV
