Primer cartridges (for bullets) explodes in luggage, causing scare.

Well, let's hope this isn't the new printer cartridge. Next I'll have to start shipping my hair gel ahead of time to the hotel...

My favorite part of the article is the end:

It should be noted, that hair spray and other aerosol cans are not allowed in carry on luggage, which forces passengers to stuff the combustible hygiene products in tightly packed luggage.

The 148 passengers from Flight 2585 had already departed the plane before the aerosol can exploded.

The TSA is still investigating. No one has been questioned or arrested from the flight.
So TSA may have made us left safe through liquid restrictions? And just what is TSA investigating? Why on earth would anyone be questioned or arrested for packing hair spray?

Blogger Bob recommends putting aerosol cans in your luggage in leak proof bags so they don't leak all over the place

Don't think that would have helped if metal pieces were getting embedded in people's shoes :D

I think at one point or another many of us have seen cans pop, but exploding to the point of spraying metal bits is something you don't consider all that often. I travel with near empty cans of starch to iron shirts with and toss out before coming home (saves from buying travel sized ones) I never would have considered them exploding only popping a seam or something.

Everything seems like it was handled perfectly by the authorities in this case . . . ^

. . . except for one thing:

The TSA is still investigating.

Except that 1 qt. & 1 l. baggies have a magical ability to contain damage from liquid explosives.

TSA did not properly checked the content for packaging for such DG based on IATA requirements.

The CBS affiliate in Miami is now reporting that it was not an aerosol can, but actually blasting caps:

LOL at comment from poster @ site... " Maybe in the future baggage handlers will treat the bags a bit more gently"

tehiota Dec 28, 2010 3:16 pm

Actually, latest report from original link says bullet primers and there has been an arrest.

I don't see how BloggerBob can spin this for a win for the TSA... FAIL

Primers are normally packaged in plastic trays to keep them separated & protected. I wonder if he packed them loose in a bag or box?

Primers can only be shipped via truck, never by air! They are the only part of a cartridge that is actually explosive.

I wonder what kind of new screening is going to be implimented by TSA/DHS after this incident. Because we all know everytime something happens they react after the fact. The problem is that what ever new screening they impliment. It just won't be the right kind of screening to find the item that can go kaboom. It will be the kind to inconvience the passengers even more.

Local law enforcement disrupted the bag and determined that it contained firearm parts," a TSA statement read.

While it is legal to have a gun and ammunition in your checked bags, it is illegal to pack primers or percussion caps.
So how come this was missed by the TSA at BOS? Aren't 100% of checked bags now screened? Discuss whilst I hurl...

Obviously, the current magic lanterns that the TSA uses are not the right ones, so they need to spend a few billion more dollars on the "right scanners."

This statement does not make sense to me. Ammunition by its very nature has a primer and is allowed but primers by themselves are not?? Is it because primers can fire more easily when they are not in a cartridge??
