I posted this awhile back in another thread, but one of the spots here that I've known since day 1 of TSA(he's #3 in seniority) told me the machines hardly ever work.

Why don't you send your question directly to the writer of the article and ask them?

Since NOOD, I haven't had the chance to opt out. In a half dozen trips through security, the WBIs have always been off. Otherwise business as usual including a new made up rule. Laptops must be in their own bin with no other items. No clothing on top nor can kippie bags share the same bin. Got the standard, "It's always been the rule."

The 14 millimeter wave machines scattered around D/FW's Terminals C and D are essentially harmless to those who get scanned, Alexander said, adding that the machines emit less radiation than a cellphone.
i feel so much better now knowing the scanners are essentially harmless... whatever that means.

Yep, its time for TSA officers is going straight back to the bed tonight.

fwiw, that's the rule as i've always understood it. enforcement has been lax the last few years, but in the early days of laptops being out, they were adamant that there be nothing else in the bin. so i'm with the TSO on this one -- "it's always been the rule." doesn't mean it's always been consistently enforced....

Just yesterday, MCI, laptop and shoes, side by side, one bin. No problem. It is a small laptop.

An idiot who is not using the IATA code, but abbreviating the airport name (Dallas/Fort Worth) in a manner familiar to the audience?

as laptops have gotten smaller, they've gotten less strict -- stuff alongside the laptop meets the spirit of the policy, as long as there's nothing on top or underneath. but when they first started doing laptops, i was routinely told that nothing else could be in the bin.....

The Dallas/Ft Worth metromess is routinely shortened to D/FW by the local newspapers. The guy writing the article apparently doesn't fly... and doesn't know the airport code is DFW instead of D/FW.

Thanks for the heads up. If that is the rule, I will follow it. However, this is the first time I have ever been informed of it. I pass through that same airport about 10x a year and it is suddenly an issue. Although I think its silly that they reran both the laptop and kippie bag in separate bins. At no time did the laptop or bag overlap. Others in the line also had their laptops re x-rayed.

If it's the rule, enforce it. The TSA calls it "inconsistency to keep terrorists on their toes." I call it poor training that deflects attention away from real threats. Based on previous experience, I will probably get yelled at for using too many bins at some point and told to put everything in one bin.

oh, i'm with you 100% on that. the TSA takes pride in being unpredictable, and then the TSO's the yell at us when we aren't following today's unpublished procedures.. but in this case, the TSO wasn't making the rule up, just enforcing it more than most of his comrades.

Sleep just fine thank you.

AITs are still be deployed (introduced you may say). Since the training process doesn't start until the machines are on site, you may see machines sitting. Also if there aren't the full amount of personnel to run the machine it may not be operated. TSOs are still going through OJT (On the Job Training) which mandates a certain amount of time at each position observed by an assessor. At larger airports with a large workforce it can take some time.

That doesn't explain the need to reintroduce the machines at DFW, now does it?

You are taking what a reporter wrote as gospel (haven't you learned already?). They don't explain what they meant either. As I stated it is possible another machine was deployed which the reporter interpreted as a reintroduction.

Maybe you should take your own advice and email the reporter and ask them to explain what they meant.
