Garmin Nav in Carry-on.

So here's a new one for me. I bought a Garmin GPS so that I don't have to pay National $11.99/day when I travel. When I go through security, do I need to take that out of my carry-on as I do my laptop?

No problem for me last week in BOS or SJU (and I told them that I had one).

Mine stays in my bag all the time...most of the time I forget it's even there. I've never been told I need to remove it for security.

I never travel without mine and it never crossed my mind to announce that I had it, nor has anyone mentioned it. The one time I was singled out for "swabbing", at SAN in April, they pulled out everything that looked mildly electronic and swabbed it.

No, and there's no need to tell them anything before the x-ray. If there's a lot of other gear in there, or something the x-ray op has trouble with, they might do a hand check of the bag. But that seldom happens to me, and I carry a bag with lots of gadgets, cables, etc.

Anyone know if DL allows the use of a portable GPS inflight? AA does.

I have been asked to remove mine a couple of times; in Moscow once and in Vientiane once. Never anywhere else.

Keep it in bag

My policy (apart from laptop) is not take anything out until challenged. GPS has never been a problem.

Domestically, I've never had to take the thing out at security --

the only problem I have with squack box, is because it's been turned off while I'm in the air, it's totally lost when I turn it on and wakes up and thinks it's where it was used last.

I used to carry my Garmin, but next domestic trip with a rental I want to try TomTom on my iPad and iPhone.

Same internationally as well for me.

OK now on DL. After 9/11 they were (stupidly) banned for a number of years. Hard to get signal, though, but I try whenever I'm in a window. I figure I should do my part to help the pilot. :)

I have never had an issue with my Garmin, stays in the bag.

I have been carrying just my Droid and now my Droid X only and using the built in navigation program, it ROCKS! Less to carry (although I carry the windshield mount) and it works better!!!

Max speed = 695 mph

If anyone asks, they do not transmit, just receive.
I have used mine on planes and that's how I now have a very unreal max speed on my logs.
As a courtesy, mute it and also make sure you have the "off road" setting, otherwise it will recalculate all the time

I believe that GPS is in fact listed as an approved device once you reach 10k feet altitude. I carry mine all the time, but never had a chance to use one. Most car GPSes (Tomtom, Garmin etc.) will have a hard time locking on to the signals when trying to cold/warm start at such high speed. If one was locked on to the signal on the ground it may continue to be locked - but it would be a violation of FAA regulations to leave them on during takeoff.

Everyone was very sensitive about this a few years ago, but then when I moved over to DL in 2007 I looked and it had dropped off the "unapproved" list. There was a time when it was neither "approved" nor "unapproved", and so I went ahead and used it. FA did "catch" me once, and I tried the "it's a receiver" line to no avail.

I use a hiking model, so no roads or sound. Held smack up against the window, I can usually get a fix depending on satellite configuration at the moment.
