I've used mine once in flight - just so it would have a really cool Max Speed on it:cool:

I carry all my electronic gadgets/wires (including my Garmin handheld GPS) in a clear gallon-size Ziploc that I take out at Security and place in a bin. Has saved me secondary bag searches for years. (I used to be routinely secondaried before I started doing this.)

As for using it on the plane, I did so for quite some time (with an external antenna suctioned onto a window...captured sat signals great) and enjoyed it. However, starting after 9/11, I quit doing so, whether allowed or not, just to keep FAs or other crew from getting nervous/suspicious. Didn't need that particular hassle.

I have a Rino530HCx.

It took about 20 minutes after power on to get a lock on location.
Max speed 697mph.

I've never tried to use it in flight (honestly never thought about it but now I may have to try it), but have never had any problem bringing it through security in my carry on bag- never been questioned about it at all.

I've had a GPS in my bag for over 3 years and hundreds of flights. Never asked to take it out or ever questioned about it.

I normally carry my Garmin in my briefcase. I was challenged at PHX a couple of weeks ago and had a secondary search. Evidently the Garmin was showing up as something strange. I now just take it out and put it in the same tray as my computer. No biggie.

no problem with mine either.

You'll be disappointed

I invested in the TomTom software for i and, while it means carrying one less device, the Garmin interface is hands down better than TomTom. If I hadn't given my Garmin to my wife, I'd think about carrying it again vs. the iphone

TSA will challenge anything that looks odd. They pulled my Bose headset once, and two weeks ago I got searched for an oversized pen that the newbie TSA scanner thought looked like a pocket knife. Just have to smile and move on...

I'm a Garmin guy and the TomTom iPhone app (the latest release) is just fine, IMO. So YMMV.

Thanks everyone! I won't worry about taking it out, especially in ATL as they don't even make you take out your liquids anymore.

Hadn't thought about using in-flight but since I'll have my case under the seat in front of me for ease of use of my laptop, I might give it a try. Especially since I'll be in a MD-88 with no moving map.

I had a newbie at BIS a couple weeks ago. The more experienced one digging through my bag kept having trouble figuring out what she was even seeing on the X-ray. At first, she thought it was the little remote for my MacBook. She had to go digging again and eventually decided it must be the engraved Zippo lighter I got for being in my brother's wedding. She pulled that out (didn't even inspect it) and sent the bag back through the machine and I was good. I've also been hassled for a piece of summer sausage. The best had to be when flying with 4 1-lb blocks of chocolate and a bunch of cables (mice, extension cords, ethernet cords) in one rollaboard. That bag had to be separated out into two bins (and some left in the bag) before they were content letting it through.

Just flew between MSP and EWR with Garmin in carry-on. Was never taken out or asked about. Have taken it to MCO as well. No worries.

It's always a game with TSA. You can never tell what they'll react to - I fly with the exact same kit, week in, week out, and sometimes it hits. Whenever someone has to get something new, its a question of what they'll think. I worked with someone who bought a drain hose for a dehumidifier while travelling, and wasn't sure how TSA would react to that. (His local Sears was out, so he bought it on the road.) It wasn't a problem, but it was a serious topic of discussion for about 2 days. If they could just be consistent, there wouldn't be a problem. When the rules change at the whim of whoever happens to be on duty that day, that's when we all have problems.

I am at the half way point of a 4K driving trip and if the TomTom app was ready for the iPad - traffic feature does not work on iPad - I could have given it a good test but I did use it for 400 miles (TN-NC) and it did as good as the nav in my E70 getting around GSO.
