Mayor Wants More Security at SFO

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Mayor Gavin Newsom Wednesday called for the addition of full body scanners at every security checkpoint at San Francisco International Airport.

SFO executive director John Martin, San Francisco Police Chief George Gascón and Mayor Newsom stood side to side at the airport's International Terminal which has been using a full body scanner for about a year to randomly check passengers for concealed weapons and explosives. Newsom said the devices use sound state-of-the-art technology that he would like see at every passenger screening location.

"We've really been a testing ground for this technology successfully. That's why we think we should be uniquely positioned front and center for any subsequent federal appropriation," said Newsom.

The mayor acknowledged concerns about privacy and criticism from civil liberties groups but said passengers don't seem to mind and not a single complaint has been received.

Not a single complaint has been received? Think that will change when you add these to both international checkpoints and all domestic checkpoints. I've never been through one on the international side. Wonder how widely used it is. Anyone been through it on that side?

I was going to write to the San Francisco city council and tell them that the reason I've stopped visiting is the disgusting groping fetish (in addition to all the other disgusting practices) of "team SFO". I guess I'll just stay away and continue to route any Asia-bound flights through LAX.

newsom is an idiot, obviously deaf, dumb, blind and does not read flyertalk ;). (and besides, when was the last time he went thru "regular security")

I bet there's a lot of federal money in play here, and he doesn't want the City to miss out on its share. I wish AA hadn't bailed out on OAK. At least UA gives you a few options there still.

I just sent Mayor Newsom the following message through his website and would encourage anyone else who opposes these scanners to contact him as well:

According to KCBS you support the installation for full body scanners at SFO in part because "not a single complaint has been received." If that is still the case please consider this your first complaint on the issue. As an individual who flies through SFO on a fairly regularly basis I strongly oppose this initiative. Full body scanners are intrusive, expensive and, most importantly, ineffective. It has been repeatably shown that full body scanners almost certainly would not have detected the bomb carried by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab and it is common knowledge that al Qaeda is already practicing defeating these devices. What we need is better intelligence gathering and cooperation, not more intrusive and pointless security theater. Short of subjecting all travelers to a body cavity search it is impossible to ensure that no one can ever get a bomb on a plane so, in my view, by the time a terrorist reaches the airport checkpoint the system has already failed.
At least, if he continues to claim not to have received a single complaint we will know he is lying.

Another letter just sent.

And got a family member to send another.

(I've filed complaints about these. Either he's not getting them or he's chosen not to read them. What a disappointment he is.)

Yes, been through told to go through it there (they often do 10 through the metal detector and then 10 through the scanner). I have always refused in favor of the 'enhanced" pat down and filed a complaint about the machines at the officer's request (claimed they were keeping records).

Either the complaints never filter down to Newsom or he's opted to ignore them.

I sent an email to Gavin Newsom and also left a comment similar to yours at http://www.flysfo.com/flysfocontactus/main

No response from mayor, but the response I received from SFO was

Customers who pass through that checkpoint can exercise their option to use a different method of screening if they so desire. Mr docmonkey, again, your comments are appreciated and will be immediately forwarded to those who need to be aware of public opinion on this topic. I met one guy on a WN flight this summer who refuses to fly VX and B6 out of SFO because of the scanner.

Good point. I should probably write VX.

I did just get the generic all-purpose response from Newsom's office:

On behalf of Mayor Newsom, thank you for your recent communication. The
Mayor's Office appreciates the importance of the valued feedback we receive
from our concerned residents or other interested parties. Your letter and
comments have been received and duly noted.

Please know that Mayor Newsom regards all public input of this nature as
important and remains committed to addressing the issues and concerns of
all our citizens (and other interested parties) when and where possible.
Thank you again and I hope this information serves your purposes.

I saw him a few years ago at SFO and he went through regular security, no escort, just by himself at terminal 3.

the time i saw him, he was flying ua and he (with his entourage of 6 people [not all of which were part of his security detail]) were escorted by ua personnel thru the fam entrance (whoops, i meant the pax exit by the elevators on the departure level near door number 8 where the fam's show their i/d's and enter ;))
