Spirit Airline Miles Reward ** Useless***

To anyone that is looking to join Spirit airlines Mileage program, don't waste your time unless you're only travel on a slow day like Tuesday.

I joined the spirit mileage program and got over 50K miles, but I can't book any flight on Saturday or Sunday. That is useless.

Just a warning for people out there.

Yeah, it's pretty challenging getting good value out of Spirit. I've redeemed miles with them 10+ times, all for NYC-FLL trips. For weekend trips, I've been able to redeem 5000 pts for 0 night Saturday trips. I've gone down to Florida for day trips in the winter a bunch of times. I also did a 4 day weekend - but that required a Tuesday return. I don't think I've ever seen a Sunday FLL-NYC award open on Spirit. You'll generally need to spend 25,000 miles for a peak flight one way.

It's a tough program, but I've been able to go on some nice gratuitous trips to the beach with Spirit.

The 6 month expiration after lack of activity is also a challenge. So basically, when I evaluate the value proposition for a trip with Spirit it is based purely on the cost of the trip. Frequent flyer miles don't even enter into the equation since I am unlikely to ever be able to accrue enough and use them before they expire. A one year inactivity expiration policy would be more reasonable and workable.

P.S. The still fill a niche for me with family travel to Florida during peak travel (a.k.a. school holiday) periods. There fares all in with the junk fees while high are still much better than the legacies and Southwest during that period.
