Ryanair to trial transfers at BCN, STN this summer

it sounds like the trial is just FR to FR flights.

although Business Traveller appears to have misunderstood this!

Interesting.

There's long been speculation that easyJet will try something similar when they eventually consolidate all their Gatwick flights in one terminal (the North terminal), a move now expected to happen in January 2017. However I think the easyJet idea is only about transfers between their own flights - the Ryanair trial is looking to a possible future of transfers to and from other airlines.

Ryanair experiments with hub-and-spoke transfers

Michael O'Leary, Ryanair's chief executive, recently told the Irish Independent that the low-cost carrier, Europe's largest, will soon begin trialling airside transfers at London Stansted and Barcelona El Prat. The move marks a departure from Ryanair's point-to-point business model, bringing it closer into line with the hub-and-spoke operations of traditional network carriers. Instead of flying you from A to B, Ryanair will begin accepting—and presumably guaranteeing—onward bookings to any number of destinations.

In 2013, when Ryanair first announced its plan to rehabilitate its toxic reputation for customer service, many were sceptical (including The Economist). But the ensuing years have proved the naysayers wrong. Gone are the punitively high surcharges and obfuscatory booking systems designed to trick customers. In their place are generous baggage allowances, a slick consumer-friendly website, and an ever-obliging social-media persona.

The two airlines have already begun working on aligning their booking systems to provide the feeder service.

What happens in case of a misconnect? First flight is late.

The same thing that happens on any connecting itinerary - you would be accommodated on a later service.

...which could mean, depending on the route frequencies, the next day. Though, depending on the reason for the initial delay, compensation may be in order.

Or would Ryanair dare to rebook onto other airlines? That'd be fun: Flying a legacy on a 4.99 euro Ryanair ticket..

The policy on baggage charges would be interesting. Will they charge for each leg or treat EDI-STN-XXX as a single leg for charging purposes?

I would imagine they would use the same model as Norwegian - where the total is the sum of the individual sectors. Norwegian provides a list of city-pairs, assigning them a code, and a table which allows you to determine the fee for every possible itinerary
