Dates for Freddies 2006?

After meeting some wonderful Flyertalkers this year and hearing about the weekend, we are looking forward to it in 2006. Do you have a date set yet? (ATL - NYC is on sale today).

SkiAdcock Jan 4, 2006 10:31 am

If I recall from the past, date & venue normally gets posted in February, although for some reason the 4th Thursday in April springs to mind. Some have suggested that it might be on the west coast in '06, but that might just be wishful thinking.

I wouldn't mind seeing alternate coasts each year - NYC one time (w/ dhammer53 Brooklyn tour day after) & SFO or LAX the next, then back to NYC. Gives more FTers a chance to participate. But that's just me.

I will go wherever Randy posts, if my schedule allows (& assuming we're invited).

Cheers.

Randy Petersen Jan 4, 2006 2:05 pm

Thanks for the question. Tradionally the Freddies are held the last Thursday in April and our plan right now is to continue that tradition.

We are looking to hold the 2006 Freddies in the L.A. area. While New York has been home for many years, many of you know that the city has become quite expensive this last year and it's hard to hold a function at the rates they are now commanding. At nearly $200 a head and with 250 guests, plus the cost of the hardware (the Freddies) and all else, you can guess it's not a cheap affair to hold. Anyway we look to have a formal decision made by end of Jan. or early Feb.

Thanks for your interest and where ever FlyerTalkers gather, we are sure you'll meet many wonderful members.

Move it to Atlanta

Several Great Regional Convention Centers here would love the business.

and Delta should still be operational then. ;)

Mary2e Jan 4, 2006 3:27 pm

wait a minute.... what's Dan going to do in LA? Can't have a Brooklyn reality tour if Brooklyn is across the country :D :D :D

Don't be silly! Those in attendance & wanting to do the Dan-Tour just hop the redeyes back to NYC :D

techgirl Jan 4, 2006 4:20 pm

Hold it in Dallas and maybe Randy can try to broker a compromise for the darned Wright Amendment fight (between WN & AA) while he is here. ;)

SkiAdcock Jan 4, 2006 11:03 pm

Woo-hoo! LA!!!

This was the first year I thought I'd have to miss the Freddies (since joining FT) cuz I have a 1-week biz event in Vegas that week & no way I could get to NYC from Vegas in time.

But - bless those little hourly flights LAS-LAX - I'll be there.

AND - while it's not the same as the dhammerbrooklyn tour, if it is in LA & doesn't interfere w/ dan's event, i'm willing to put together some LA-based post-Freddies event & know the other LA-based FTers will get involved to put together a great time.

Am also willing to have folk over to my place during the weekend, which is a block from the beach & lot of (every) chain hotels nearby.

Cheers.

dhammer53 Jan 5, 2006 6:29 am

Who's going to attend The Freddies if the Brooklyn Tour doesn't provide any of the attendees. ;) :D

Not to worry folks, the Brooklyn Tour will go on; just on another date.
I'll post that date in due course.

flygirl555 Jan 5, 2006 7:10 am

Randy, thanks for your reply...

LA or ATL both sound great to me. If it's in LA, I can combine it with a MR, if it's in ATL, I will be happy to help with organizing an event since I am local.

tcook052 Jan 7, 2006 12:08 am

Sorry, thought this was a thread to find dates to take to the Freddie award ceremony. ;)

SkiAdcock Jan 7, 2006 10:29 am

Well Randy did say they're looking to continue the tradition of 4th Thursday in April. Stay tuned until end of Jan or Feb for definite answer & where in LA (since the Greater Los Angeles area encompasses 5 counties). Cheers.

parnel Jan 7, 2006 1:30 pm

LAX is the perfect NA MR locale for us Eastern Canucks......... YYZ/YVR/LAX return can be between 6K and 7K Q miles on AC for the same money as a direct flt. Variations to this routing could make the run miles even higher. Good incentive to go IMO.

How come no one ever posts a thread wondering when the BRT will take place?  :D :o

FYI, I'm leaning towards the first Saturday in May.

SkiAdcock Jan 7, 2006 8:10 pm

Dan, because THIS thread is about the Freddies, & someone else resurected the BrookylnTour2005 thread on Community. If you've picked the first Sat in May, start a new thread there so folk can start posting on it :) Cheers.

SKiAdcock,

I hope you know that I was kidding.

ozstamps Jan 10, 2006 4:22 am

Well I very recently was guest on a SkiAdcock LA Beachside Reality Tour, and feel sure she might be subtly railroaded into doing it on a larger scale. ;)

LAX for the Freddies sounds a neat idea. ^

Starwood are saying there will not be a Starwood property of any colour in Manhattan that is not Cat 5 for awards this year, due to strongly rising revenue rates in NYC, so I sure can see Randy's point, as banquet costs I bet went up with them. High NYC hotel rates will also impact on all those FT'ers flying in of course.

LAX Hotel rates are usually a fraction of NYC.

Had a west coast vacation planned for late April, so might work this one in. ;)

MileageAddict Jan 15, 2006 7:00 pm

Oh boy oh boy....decisions need to be made. :( I can attend either the Freddies (assuming they are in the LAX-SNA area) or the DFW Doo. But...not both.

ACK!

C'mon, Randy! Tell us where!!!!

The Freddies start five days after the last DFW DO event.

KathyWdrf Jan 16, 2006 3:42 am

Normally, I would whine about the Freddies not being somewhere on the East Coast. After all, I get more EQMs for the buck flying transcons than anything else domestically! (You can tell I'm a true FTer. :D )

But this year, I plan to attend a college reunion in the greater LA area the last weekend of April anyway. So if the Freddies venue is in that general vicinity on Thursday evening, this could work out well for me!

(Of course, I realize the Freddies ceremony, much less the world, doesn't revolve around me.... just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. ;) )

SkiAdcock Jan 16, 2006 11:17 am

mileageaddict, Randy said the decision would be announced in late Jan or early Feb, so that's probably when he'll announce ;) :D

techgirl, i think mileageaddict means he can probably get a 'hall pass' for one weekend, not two, but that's just a guess.

Alas I can't go to the DFW Do cuz I'll be in Vegas for the trade show already, but look forward to seeing people at the Freddies.

Cheers.

Ack! Decisions, decisions. I really want to go to the Freddies, having been in '03 and '04 but traveling during the event in '05... I get back to DC from Asia on Tuesday afternoon and really need some days in the office, so going to California for a Thursday evening event is not got for gleff's career ;) plus I figure on heading to a FT event in SFO just a couple weeks later. And yet I *do* want to be there. Ugh. Decisions.

TrojanHorse Jan 18, 2006 11:55 am

See you there.. paying my off my bet of course :o

SkiAdcock Jan 18, 2006 1:00 pm

gleff come on out! you can catch the red-eye back...i'm so glad this year is in la cuz w/ the vegas trip i couldn't have made it in nyc, and i've attended each year since joining ft...

i'm probably going to land from vegas an hour before the start, so will probably take the hotel shuttle (it has one doesn't it?) to the hotel & change in some accomodating fters room. since i live 10 minutes from the hotel i'll just cab it home at 3am or whenever the party is finished...

also i'm serious about being willing to put togethe a post-freddies do over the weekend & will rope in some of the other la-based folk to help. am also willing to have folk over to my place during the weekend - live a block from the beach & 10 minutes from the airport. we could potentially have a party there either fri or sat. i've gotten 70 in my place for other parties (and that was w/ an xmas tree), so know it can be done. it's cozy ;) :D

SkiAdcock Jan 18, 2006 1:57 pm

Hey which *Wood FTer is going to get a suite at the FourPoints (do 4Ps have suites - never stayed at one) for the traditional After-Freddies FTer party?

Cheers.

wingless Jan 18, 2006 3:32 pm

I have to be in San Bernardino in the morning but I will definately be there. What time does it begin?

typhoon Jan 18, 2006 3:36 pm

I'm not planning on being there (a transatlantic followed by a transcon is too much) but am curious about how tickets are distributed... It doesn't mention on the website how to attend which makes me wonder if FT is the way in...

IIRC the Starwood triple points LAX deal is in place until end April.

BONUS STARPOINTS FOR STAYS ON THE WEST COAST!

Thank you for registering for this rewarding Starwood Preferred
Guest(R) promotion. Now you'll earn 1,000 Starpoints(R) after your
first stay, 2,000 Starpoints after your second and 3,000 Starpoints
after your third -- for up to 6,000 Starpoints -- through
April 30, 2006.

For anyone with Starwood miles it is only a Cat #1 and award rooms run only 2000 or 3000 a night, (lower on weekends) and they had availability as of an hour back. ;)

Have stayed there several times and yes Sharon they have a shuttle. :)

I was there a month or so back drinking with FT'ers at that VERY neat Belguim Beer Bar they have there in the Four Points lobby. ^ ^

One kokonutz could not keep up with the 10% alcohol real beers, cabbed it to airport, fell asleep in gate lounge and missed the last UA red-eye to the east. Slept in the airport all night: ;)

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showp...6&postcount=30

SkiAdcock - a Saturday after-doo sounds great and your place would be great - we can all toss in $50 each to re-carpet it afterwards. :)

SkiAdcock Jan 18, 2006 8:53 pm

To answer typhoon's question...

Actually we're all assuming Randy is going to be kind enough to invite FTers to attend again this year, but that's an eager assumption on our part.

Since voting etc doesn't even begin until Feb 1st (vote early & often, err, early ;) ), no way to register to attend yet. I think, if memory serves, there is normally a link later if FTers are invited. The industry folk get invited via separate method. And as far as I know it's not open to the public.

wingless, this is a rough estimate, but i think cocktails are 5-6, dinner 6-7:30, 7:30pm-on (10ish?) are awards.

Since this is his forum, I'm sure Randy will be back on at some point to fill us all in on the proper scoop.

Cheers.

Edit - my question answered.

That's strange. The West Coast bonus I signed up for did NOT include any hotels in Southern California; only SOME Starwood hotels in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. (There is a list of 15 participating hotels.)

Did Starwood issue multiple versions of the "same" promo???

Anyhow, I booked a room at the Four Points LAX at a cancellable AAA rate of $105+tax. If a better deal comes along, I will rebook it. There are some cheaper rates out there, but they are prepaid and nonrefundable (such as a $70 senior rate, a $99 internet rate, etc.).

ozstamps Jan 18, 2006 11:26 pm

Kathy - my bad. I registered a while back and remembered the promo was called "BONUS STARPOINTS FOR STAYS ON THE WEST COAST!" and checking back into it now see LAX hotels were not included in any form. Weird.

But the $105 you found is a great rate, or 3000 miles for those so inclined. :p

Maybe they will have a "BONUS STARPOINTS FOR STAYS IN LALA LAND" promo... One can always hope. ;)

Or perhaps there will be a special Freddies rate?

stockmanjr Jan 19, 2006 12:56 am

Decided that it was better to remove post
-howie

SkiAdcock Jan 19, 2006 10:07 am

And for folk who are members of the other hotel programs, basically every chain is represented at LAX & easy to get to 4Pts. The hotels along Century Blvd will be the closest to 4Pts, vs ElSegundo (although that's only about 5 minutes farther).

Cheers.

PS - Maybe *Wood considers LA the really far-left coast vs west coast so it's not listed in promo. ;) :D

jan_az Jan 22, 2006 12:26 pm

This is really exciting - since its in LA that means I can fly over and get there in time for drinks on Thurs nite - WOOHOO!!!

delacpa Jan 23, 2006 4:53 pm

We'll Be There!!

Mr. & Mrs. delacpa are so excited to find out that this year the Freddies will be practically "just around the corner"

Thanks for the excellent planning, both in locale AND time of year (after end of tax season ;) )
