Moderators were appointed who had wide powers to ban actions, posts and posters they chose to - indeed for a while OMNI was the only forum a moderator could ban anyone from posting on. Then an additional safeguard against political and other trolls - the 100 post minimum rule was introduced to hopefully keep out other than regular FT'ers who had added something to miles and points posts in the past. It all failed. OMNI had nothing to do with the core of FT which is miles and points, and no-one could argue that OMNI was not given plenty of chances to succeed if everyone played more or less by the rules. I do not see how you can say that it "failed". It was a vibrant community with lots of users and posts. If miles and points are the only consideration, then you should toss out "Community" forum or the "Only Randy" forum too because I do not see that either contributes to miles or points. As someone who has argued for less moderation, I would say that the solution is to let people post, clearly state the guidelines (which I think has been done), and once a week revoke the posting privileges of abusers. Adopt a 3 strike rule, where the first violation is a week/month, the second one is a month/3 months and the third one is a total ban. This is not going to fix everything, but it will minimize the time that the moderators have to spend (and let them revoke somewhat liberally). |
Although I have been missing OMNI by not finding time to post or even view it these past few weeks, OMNI will be missed.
One small request: please leave past OMNI threads/posts available for searches. There are some useful threads in there (beyond the entertaining, informative and/or disputed ones). |

And yet, when we moderate something we get bombarded with PM's, emails, posts in ORP how unfair we are. Really, closing it was a good thing right now. If OMNI comes back, should be minus politics, religion and we cannot have only-OMNI members that love to cause trouble. We had too many of those :( |

Remember this question posed last year?
"What is the chatter about closing OMNI about?" http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...highlight=omni |

Emails on how unfair you are should right away be discarded, end of discussion on those. Have a rule that anyone who publicly posts about these unfairness issues or moderator issues gets two strikes. Just out of curiosity how many offending posts do you think there were in a week? |

Sometimes more, sometimes less. |
Although I too will miss OMNI, at the end of the day enough posters were going out of their way to pick a virtual fight that it was only a matter of time before it was closed; no one can say there wasn't ample warning. If people could only refrain from the political & religious backbiting it would have been fine, but I guess that was just too much to ask for

I haven't visited OMNI at all in the last three months... and have posted there little to none in the past six to nine months.
I don't miss it nearly as much as I might have predicted a year ago. I've found other outlets for that type of chatter (other IBBs, real-life friends) and don't feel like my enjoyment of FT has been hindered one bit. |

We hasked TPTB for a ban on certain topics (as Mary has already outlined), it was rejected. So I guess we'll have to live with no OMNI at all. :( |
