How many reputation points will you need for two or three or more green squares next to your username profile ??? I ask this specifically for Flyertalk and not vBulletin in general. How many points do you have, ScottC ?
Will I get a point for this question ? Please!!! :) :) ^^ |
This feature must go
Since the innuendo is hanging out there like a week old sweat sock, I feel I must make this statement:
I have not used the reputation feature, positive or negative. In my opinion, it would be hypocritical to be against the feature and then use it. If in fact, the WebFlyer team can identify users of the feature, they can verify that I have not used it. |
As with Punki, I would like to also ask Randy to please tell me who is leaving me anonymous negative feedback.
Anonymity with regard to dinging someone's reputation is unfair. Members should have to take personal responsibility for their bad, possibly meritless, remarks about other members. It creates bad will and erodes morale. If dings "aren't a big deal," then take personal responsibility for them out of consideration for those who may feel that they ARE a big deal. If they "are a big deal," then again, take personal responsibility for them, since they count. |
If OMNI was not a part of FT, and nothing was discussed that was more controversial
than miles and points, then the 'reputation' feature might work quite well. So, we have to separate the pro-reputation arguments from people who base their FT experience on 'miles and points', from the anti-reputation arguments of many who include, and participate in, OMNI as a part of the FT cafeteria. Unfortunately, even if this feature was turned off in OMNI, it would not matter, as many would find their retribution in the other FT forums. . |

Should it be only on the travel-related information? Does it warrant a postive vote only if it contains accurate information and a negative one only if the information is inaccurate? (This would mean that opinions, as opposed to verifiable facts, would not be judged.) Because there are no objective grounds for giving or taking points from someone, the reputation becomes meaningless. It may, however, give people some enjoyment and hence I have no real objection to it. I will judge people based on my own experience with them -- not on reputation points -- and I expect that most posters will also. This makes the reps a harmless addition. |
I am still feeling lost. How can I check my reputation points? I have understand that I should click on MyFlyerTalk but then what? I cant see them anywhere :( Can someone help me?

The default value appears to be +10 points. If you click on MyFlyerTalk on the upper left of your screen, the new screen will show a list (middle of screen) called New Subscribed Threads. If people have rated your reputation, beneath New Subscribed Threads will appear a chart called Latest Reputation Received which is a list with the 5 most recent ratings you have received containing the following info: the rating (approve/disapprove), a link to the thread/post they rated you on, the date/time, and a comment if one was left. If you don't see this chart, you most likely haven't been rated yet. If you haven't been rated and want to check your approval rating (the default), in MyFlyerTalk click on Edit Options. The second option is Show My Reputation Level in which you will see your current level. |
I personally believe the Reputation feature has good potential.
What people consider positive or negative will never be consistent... I have seen people on Ebay give a neutral rating and comment "Very good seller... highly recommend." In my book, that would be a positive comment. We as a community will have to deal with this just as we deal with other new things in this community.... I probably will issue positive reputation points for people in the community I respect and who have helped me over the years... and also those who provide thought provoking threads and posts... and not necesarrily ones I agree with. I probably will not issue any negative reputation points... but would do as I do now... post my concerns... or email the person. Now... off to issue some positive reputations.... want some? :) William |
I'm fine with reputation as it was conceived to work here on FT.
Like Punki, I can take care of myself, but I just want to know who is slamming me. Keep in mind that all dings are traceable, since you are not giving feedback anonymously, but rather on the basis of your user ID. Ergo, the FT hamsters have a record of who said what to whom, even if those who are slamming didn't realize it. Electronic footprints. Let me just say here, that I recognize that Randy and his staff have been working so very hard on this transition (Randy putting in over 100 hours last week alone! God bless him), so personally, I wouldn't want to irritate him with a low priority issue like this right now, but I would make the suggestion that at a future point when things have calmed down, and the transition is complete, that he address this issue in due course - and he may decide to leave it just as it is, and I'm fine with THAT. :) But I just think some of the other members participating in this thread have made some good points, and this "reputation" thing is a change from the status quo, and not all changes are good. So, whatever Randy thinks is fine with me. |

interesting/problematic quirk about reputation comments
If you disable your reputation display (as I've done due to my moderator status), you cannot see who is "dinging" and who is "pinging" your reputation. You cannot see the comments without enabling the feature.
I had received several anonymous negative dings and a few positive pings, but could not tell who they were from without re-enabling the feature. I would find it useful to see the non-anonymous comments directed my way, even if I choose to leave the feature disabled. Just a thought. |

People make catty comments about me and other users all the time and that is certainly more damaging and out in the open than a thumbsup/thumbsdown over a single post. Besides, vbulletin does NOT track who leaves feedback. It just increments or decrements a number in a database. And if anyone thinks the people in COS have spare time to hunt through gigs of log files to find out the identity of who disapproved of a post, and then defeat the intended and anonymous nature of the feature by divulging it, I think they are in for a surprise. |
