Originally posted by Counsellor: I don't know if you knew it, attorney28, but the more recent versions of UBB (I think starting somewhere around 6.0 -- FlyerTalk currently uses version 5.47e) offer many of those features, and some were even offered in the earlier UBB software. Examples: - Posting of pictures (although that really burns up bandwidth); - Shortcuts for smilies and other emoticons; - Edit within ~5 minutes without "Last edited..." notice appearing (and also a "preview post" feature) So, I think the main feature that would be newly available would be the "ignore poster" feature. Some of the rest (I think to include posting pictures) were offered at one time on this board, but were removed due to bandwidth consumption issues (IIRC). Maybe the new software will permit them to be offered again. And I do NOT think that allowing posting pictures increases bandwidth, as they are always hosted elsewhere, so the bandwidth is only increased by whatever amount of data needs to be processed for the link to the image location. In other words, the image is embedded in the thread, but it is not really "on Flyertalk servers", it just looks that way on your computer. |
So .... is all of FT still on New Year vacation? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Have never seen this Alexa site before, and have no idea if the info is generally accurate or not or well respected. ScottC or other web industry techies may know more? Pretty interesting (to me) that this kind of data is out there. I just compared the FT graph with my morning newspaper, the Sydney Morning Herald, which also shows a similar and large 'relativity rating' slump in the past week which is strange. ------------------ ~ Glen ~ sipping bubbly from a UA 747-400 exit row 15 near you SOON! Congrat's FT. BTW, another fave of mine is #17 on the list: Eddie Van Halen UBB. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Originally posted by thadocta: It increases bandwidth in the sense that someone reading the thread HAS to download the images - it happens automagically. By posting a URL rather than an image, you reduce what the READER has to download, and given that not all of us have broadband connections (I would die if I had to go back to dialup) we should not be forcing everyone reading a thread to download more than they really have to. Dave You can turn off automatic loading of images if that is your concern. |

Originally posted by thadocta: Is that a vbulletin feature, or are you suggesting that you utilise this feature of your web browser? If the former, I don't have a problem. If the latter, I do, you do not want to go in and tweak the settings of your browser for each and every website you wish to visit. Dave Edit: I just checked in the user control panel of the other bulletin board I visit and yes, it is indeed a vbulletin feature also. "Show image attachments and [img] code in Posts? Selecting no will show a hyperlink instead." [This message has been edited by attorney28 (edited Jan 24, 2004).] |
