Yes, we're still a little undecided about OMNI. So far we've talked about just ending it, trying to come up with another URL and posting it away from FT, developing a forum of its own, developing a Misc. area which it might be added to, deeding it over to Gaucho100K (grin!), and other ideas not named here. The challenge is that it brings pleasure and interest to a small army of members and we are glad for that; but it also brings a real test of our patience because there is a very small number of members who simply can not put a lid on their zealous distain of others opinions and comprehend that FlyerTalk is quite diverse, not just in issues related to gay marriages, but liberal left wing and other political and religous points of view. We've spent more time on deciding what to do with OMNI than almost any other issue to date when we change over FT.

I do have some bad news. In yesterday's changeover meeting, we have determined that there is no way we can keep FlyerTalk closed during the changeover for less than 4 days. It will probably be a Friday to Monday night close to changeover the threads to the new technology. We're headed toward 3 million posts on FT and its a challenge to port those over.

I'll advise more as we get closer.

Im afraid I would never accept OMNI, I just like to post there... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

As to the solutions for OMNI, its actually quite simple. Leave it unmoderated.

The future of Omni and OMNI - a case for removing moderation.

I don't know - all I know is that you have something here that I've never seen anywhere else on the 'Net.</font>
The information from FTers about the subjects above as well as others is incredibly valuable. Why? The majority of FTers are professionals; they aren't a bunch of yo-yo's who languish on the internet to cause trouble. These are real people who tend to be successes in their respective fields and thus have a wealth of information to share.

So for the few yo-yo's who feel it necessary to belittle people, discuss boys'locker room topics and the like----they are the minority. The moderators are doing a great job with locking their childish and insipid posts. Please keep Omni for the majority who share life's experiences or just want to find out how to deal with the intracacies of throwing a good party, locating the best place to rent a wedding gown, or how to train their basset hound to stop barking at night. These things are important! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I don't know if I would go that far. But there is no question that the present OMNI moderation is unacceptable. Unless you are a flaming liberal, gay activist, SSM proponent, or member of the clique, rest assured that your opinions will be stifled.

Boy are my ears burning!

Since the gutless OMNI moderators are too afraid to address the issue openly, I'll just post my reply (to this thread) here:

Randy - Please don't close OMNI!

I LOVE IT!

I read maybe one out of every 10 topics and maybe post to one out of every 100. It doesn't take much effort to ignore the topics that are intended to inflame or the posters that make them.

People appear to be much too sensitive to be complaining about this stuff. It's just words and they can't hurt you.

I find that OMNI is jsut about as heated as the Delta forum although the topics differ. The posters in the Delta froum are after each other constantly and I find it great fun to watch.

Now that is dramatic....I'm not a flaming, liberal, gay activist, SSM proponent, or member of a clique yet somehow my opinions are not stifled at all. They aren't out to get the right wing. Hate to break that to you but it's true. If they were, I would have been escorted out of Omni three years ago. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Sounds to me that you and Gaucho are very much alike in this anti-moderator sentiment. Well, I can't change your mind but I certainly can show Randy that most FTers do not share the disdain you both hold for moderators. I am in awe that they take the time to moderate. Nobody is perfect; but they do a good job and they allow Omni to exist.

Exactly. Including the very fine voluntary OMNI moderators.

But, I can assure you, there most certainly is a very clear double-standard employed. And if you don't believe me, keep a close eye out for my OMNI posts over the next 7 days.

BTW, I believe that all of the "atta-boys" for volunteering all of their valuable time to moderate OMNI is way overblown. Sure, it takes time. But it is not as if they weren't already wasting a bunch of time on OMNI just like the rest of us.

To borrow from doppy, there must be something wrong - I'm in agreement with Analise! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

but she's totally right - the moderators are not perfect, but they do an awesome job volunteering. I think some people draw what I think are very sweeping overgeneralizations, when what's really meant is, "the board isn't Right enough for me," or "the board isn't Left enough for me."

Well, life's a female dog, then you die.

Well, you'd have to actually PROVE that, with specific examples, as far as I'm concerned. If what you are suggesting is that you intend to violate the Terms of Service over the next seven days in a pre-meditated way, I would suggest that that is not a fair "experiment." If the double standard is really "very" clear, you should no have problem substantiating that claim using existing examples.

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Thanks for posting that - I clicked the receive e-mail box & I keep getting e-mails about this off-topic subject.

A good enhancement would be the ability to "unsubscribe" to a post or for readers to "subscribe" to a post (even if they didn't start it).

Funny. Run back through this thread and check out which poster started the OMNI discussion. And BTW, I think that my comments go a long way toward "discussing ideas on how to improve and enhance FlyerTalk".

OK. Go take alook at the front page of OMNI today. It's all right there in black and white. Or I could post or copy you on some "private e-mails", if you prefer (of course that would get the mods' panties in a wad).

No, I have suggested no such thing. Guess again.

Okay. I'm not sure what you're talking about, though.
