Perhaps I was a bit obscure - with my LAX-JFK-LHR example, Qantas do not currently fly JFK-LHR, so a ticket with that routing would not be allowed by Qantas, even though it would not violate DOT Cabotage laws. Qantas would allow JFK-LAX on QF108 with a LAX stopover, then LAX-MEL on QF94 as long as it's on the same booking.

I believe the only debate in regard to the OP is if each use of QF107/QF108 LAX/JFK needs to be connection/stopover.

i.e. Would the following be allowed if flying Qantas LAX/JFK and Qantas to/from SYD and all on the one ticket?

1. SYD-LAX,JFK-LAX
2. SYD-LAX,LAX-JFK
3. SYD-JFK,JFK-LAX (OP's itinerary)
4. SYD-JFK,LAX-JFK

IMHO, I believe all would be allowed by Qantas.

My bet is only Number 2:D

Serfty is probably right with 1 to 4 but being right does not necessarily mean you get what you are entitled to, and minutes before departure is not the time to argue the toss with an adamant supervisor who has the power to kick you out. I would only book number 2. There is no way I'd risk numbers 1,3,4 or any combination other than a plain vanilla Oz-LAX-JFK or JFK-LAX-Oz. Not worth the hassle, IMO.

Thanks. I know this is quite a controversial point so I have decided to travel JFK-SFO instead as my A Class upgrade on the 763 aircraft came through!:D

Although a Skybed is better for a 5 hours flight, the though of having a big stuff up like this at the airport is just not worth the hassle and also given it will be BA/QF that will be issuign the BP @ JFK, I don't think you can play dumb. Also carrying 2 cases @ 32kgs each to go from T7 to T9 is not something I want to do!

I'm doing a DONE4 and coming back from SYD to JFK on QF107 via LAX in Oct. Although QF metal, this was booked with AA RTW desk and using AA codeshare. Sounds like the consensus is that I can probably do a stopover in LAX and then get back on QF107 in LAX to JFK without much issue (I now have a reason to stop in LA). I realize the worse case is denied boarding and heading to an AA flight but I'm traveling with kids and after a month in Oz, lot of luggage.

I plan on calling AA RTW desk to confirm but wanted to see if others had any problems or not with QF recently.

I had this recently, on the AA codeshare flight across the Pacific. I asked if I could get on QF107 onwards to JFK and was told at LAX that travel would need to be on AA.

I couldn't get availability on SYD-JFK right through when booking, had to break it up and fly AA on LAX-JFK.

This is not quite right...Qantas do have this one domestic route in the US, San Fra - LAX - JFK, it is a hangover from the very early days. QANTAS also had fly on rights to London. They choose not to fly domestic passengers in the US presumably because of arrangements with AA, they voluntarily gave up NY to London a few years back.

Were you traveling across the pacific on the QF flight number or the AA flight number?

A month or so ago I flew SYD-LAX on QF, then LAX-SFO-LAX on AA (with a 5 day stopover in SFO) followed by LAX-JFK on QF107. The AA flights were taken on a QF code-shared flight number.

I was told when booking that this was okay because I was flying into the US on a Qantas flight (aircraft and flight number). This was on an AONE4 fare.
