MPN is a must if you can. If you don't like the LA option, you can always use RAF in the L1011 to get there (but, IIRC, you need a yellow fever jab because of the Ascension Is landing).

The other interesting part is the blunt lecture to everyone from the British army officer at the baggage carousel upon arrival on what a land mine looks like and what to do if you see one.

Formally, it is a 'British Crown Colony' (yep, that still exists :) ) and therefore does not form part of the United Kingdom except for European elections purposes, where it suddenly becomes part of South West England ;) .

Yes and no. All that the British Overseas Territories Act 2002 does is to amend the British Nationality Act 1981 so as to substitute the term British Overseas Territory to British Dependent territory in it and all that the British Nationality Act 1981 does is to define various categories of citizenships. Neither Act redefines the constitutional status of any of the relevant territories as such. They are purely concerned about nationality and citizenship. In that sense, it would not be improper to still refer to the relevant territories as crown colonies even though you are unlikely to come across the term in more recent legislative acts.
In the European Court of Justice case last month about participation of the inhabitants of Gibraltar to European elections, the Court still referred to Gibraltar as a 'British Crown colony'.

The LA SCL-MPN flights do run in October (Saturdays only); I just did it. The RAF flights (twice a week) are now flown by some Icelandic carrier as the RAF is using all of its planes in Iraq. For ordinary people, only economy class is available, though Army high-ups get to sit in better seats. According to locals, the planes are normally empty and it is easy to get rows of empty seats to lie down and sleep.
