Oneworld members boost key Asian routes

Oneworld members boost key Asian routes

Finnair and Cathay Pacific are improving services on several key Asian routes. The Helsinki-based carrier is adding a new route to Delhi on October 30 and will double the number of flights to Tokyo (from two to four a week) at the beginning of December. Both services will have good connections from other airports in mainland Europe, Scandinavia and the UK...

Tokyo Narita will be served by an Airbus A340-300 every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from Helsinki from December with flights returning the next day. Finnair's new flights are those operating on Thursday and Sunday out plus Monday and Friday back...

In Asia, Cathay Pacific hopes to launch a single daily flight on the important Hong Kong to Shanghai route on December 1...

Cathay's new service will provide various connections at its Hong Kong hub. It will also providing another opportunity for Oneworld members to earn frequent flyer miles...

Lhasa is a great city.... But don't fly in. Stop somewhere along the way and acclimatize. I stopped 3 days in Xining and another 3 in Golmud and had no problems. Besides it looks like the new train will be a great deal more comfortable than the 24 hour approx b*s ride I took....

After high altitutde cigarettes enjoyed in Bogota, Quito and Cuzco and about 2/3 of the way up Mt Aconcagua, I doubt altitude acclimatisation will be a factor. Always puts you in the right frame of mind should an airline lose your baggage ;)

Any hint of OW service to Kathmandu?

Dream on........

TG would probably be the only reasonable choice in the air.
Though there are some short connections to India and the new carriers seem ot be doing something right.....

Oneworld out of BOM however, is still quite weak, with the best connections being offered only by BA. Cathay and Qantas also fly, true, but with limited number of times a week, and at odd hours / routes / aircraft / connections.

Why does DEL get AA, EY in addition and now JAL and Malev as well. (Hint of jealousy  )

I've posted this earlier, but I'm really, really crossing my fingers for 9W to join OW...!!!

AA codeshares with S2, so unless another 1W member starts codesharing with 9W I'd call it unlikely.

Many OW airlines have codeshares with Star and Skyteam members -- sometimes more than with OW! So I don't think it is particularly indicative.

QF already code shares with 9W from BOM to SIN...

I couldn't scare any ref to Lhasa out of the Cathay web site. Was this a wishful-thinking comment, or are they planning to operate the route?

Perhaps for the same reason as not (yet) adding PVG - awaiting Chinese government permission.

Looking at Wikipedia on the matter of Lhasa and the railroad, it would seem difficult to find anywhere along the route to adjust. They emphasize the exciting parts, of course, but there seemed to be plenty of opportunity to travel at 15,000 ft, significantly higher than Lhasa at about 12,000. IIRC of course. Flying into a 12,000' environment shouldn't be too damaging to healthy people. Wiki said the Chinese oxygen-enriched the train cars rather than pressurizing them, btw. That seem odd. They were built by Bombardier, who should know how to accomplish that.

That sounds like a perfect recipie for a flaming disaster. That is, if you know how a rich oxygen source can help combustion.

Worked with the liquid for a couple of years, as a genuine rocket scientist. Of course the Chinese are merely "enriching" the atmosphere (or pretending they are, to calm pax), but as interesting an adventure as it might be, my personal feeling about a Chinese-government showpiece extreme-engineering-challenge railroad makes me just as disinclined to ride that thing as to book Aeroflot for my next transatlantic flight.

Actually, reading the Wikipedia article caused me to conclude that Lhasa would have been an interesting stop 15 or 20 years ago. I still have Lukla and Namche to check off, and with Nepal seemingly cooling off politically I'll just see if I can make that happen.
