I believe you can also get PVG on AA metal, but yes, it's very annoying, but it's difficult to get connecting flights on Japan airlines. Last month I was able to get a connecting itinerary to Manila, but I've had a hard time with Singapore and Taipei.

Another data point, for what it is worth. Just checkrd NGO (Nagoya)-HKG in J for the week of March 17. Using the BA site it is available on CX on 5 of 7 days. AA shows nothing in J on CX for all seven days.

I've been able to find economy awards on CX quite a few times from AAdvantage, but I don't think I've ever seen business.
