OW Explorer ex BOM

Bit of a challenge for you FT'ers: Any suggestions for optimum routing to maximise mileage for a 3 continents OWE ex Bombay (NB must include SYD and LHR on this itinerary)

christep Dec 1, 2002 4:35 am

You can't do a 3 continents OWE including Australia - it has to be at least 4: Europe, Australia, Asia, N America.

virtualtroy Dec 1, 2002 4:53 am

OK, so let's try again... based on a 4-continent OWE.

christep Dec 1, 2002 8:23 am

OK I'll throw in a starting shot for people to check/improve on:

BOM-HKG-DPS-HKG-LHR-DXB-LHR-IST-LHR-LAX-JFK-DFW-ANC-DFW-SJU-LIH//HNL-AKL-SYD-PER-DRW-SYD-HKG-BOM

for 65045 miles.

Do you mean SJC instead of SJU?

virtualtroy Dec 1, 2002 10:27 am

Thanks for the suggestions. Just curious, is it really possible to pass through LHR that many times? Are stopovers permissible on all of those?

You can stop in LHR (and most other places) as many times as you desire. The only restriction on stopovers is two in the continent of origin - Asia.

SJU-LIH is a valid single plane route for AA285 although it makes stops in MIA and LAX on the way.

christep: Nice routing!

pegasus8228 Dec 1, 2002 8:53 pm

LHR-LAX-sxm-jfk-DFW-ANC-DFW-jfk-SYD

what about this for N.A.?

virtualtroy Dec 2, 2002 1:52 am

Thanks christep & ExMo. I took a look at the fare rules for OWE, as published by BA, and it states that "not more than 2 segments may be between the UK and Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Israel, Macedonia, Malta, Morocco, Funchal, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Tunisia, Ukraine, Yugoslavia and the Middle East". So am I correct in understanding that IST is considered to be part of Europe, rather than the middle east?

And is there an exception to DXB if it is used as a point of transit?

yes.

no.

IST + DXB is the theoretical maximum fpr Euro-segments under the current ruote map and OWE rule

HNL-AKL is not possible in Explorer fare AFAIK.

Sorry - that was my mistake doing it off the top of my head. For some reason I was thinking the QF SYD-HNL went via AKL.

Pegasus' suggestion comes out with slightly more miles in NA, so our combined best effort at the moment is:

BOM-HKG-DPS-HKG-LHR-DXB-LHR-IST-LHR-LAX-SXM-JFK-DFW-ANC-DFW-JFK-SYD-PER-DRW-MEL-AKL-HKG-BOM

for 68031 miles

(I've fine-tuned the Aus/NZ part a bit too)

Isn't HKG-CMB longer than HKG-DPS?

number_6 Dec 2, 2002 4:12 pm

ANC service is seasonal on AA (starts June 1 for DFW-ANC and STL-ANC, no schedule yet for ORD-ANC).

Yes - good point. HKG-KHI is even better.

So:

BOM-HKG-KHI-HKG-LHR-DXB-LHR-IST-LHR-LAX-SXM-JFK-DFW-ANC-DFW-JFK-SYD-PER-DRW-MEL-AKL-HKG-BOM

for 69670 miles.

Guy Betsy Dec 2, 2002 8:41 pm

AA does not do LAX-SXM. It does LAX-SJU however.

That should be enough for EXP on a 4 cont OWE for less than $6000...not too bad.

Darren Dec 3, 2002 6:33 am

Impossible, even with an F ticket. Half of it's in business. Would probably net about 85k points, just by looking at it. You can do it with a 4 cont F class, iirc, but not with that one.

christep Dec 3, 2002 9:03 am

By my reckoning it's at least 97478 Q-miles, but anyway...

christep Dec 3, 2002 11:26 am

Here is the AONE4 getting EXP and meeting virtualtroy's requirements:

BOM-HKG-KHI-HKG-AKL-SYD-PER-DRW-SYD-LHR-DXB-LHR-IST-LHR-LAX-JFK-DFW-ANC-DFW-SJU-JFK-HKG-BOM

which is 71689 base miles, which (I think) splits 45184/26505 in F/J, for 100907 Q-miles.

virtualtroy Dec 3, 2002 12:07 pm

Hey guys - before you get carried away suggesting I should get a OWE in F, even J seems pretty pricey... Or is this based on J travel in N America being in F by default? Thanks for all the contributions, btw...

pegasus8228 Dec 3, 2002 10:11 pm

i found 1.35-1.40 to be a good estimate for the mix of J/F segments for AONE#. (most of the times it turned out to be close to 1.4)

christep Dec 3, 2002 11:47 pm

Well to get to my figure for the J/F split I took the following sectors in F/A, on the basis of what is currently showing in itn.net for June next year which is when you would have to do it to get the ANC flights:

HKG-AKL; SYD-LHR-DXB-LHR; LHR-LAX-JFK-DFW-ANC-DFW; JFK-HKG
