OW ATW trip -- will the let me do this?

Hi Folks,

I've read the **marvelous** FewMiles unofficial guide to OW ATW fares and I think I still managed to screw this up. It's already been sent to EI for pricing/approval. Any thoughts? (My time is limited on this trip, so I can't add any segments. Anyway, I'm not in it for the miles. Yeah. Right.)

1) EI BOS-DUB
2) EI DUB-LGW connecting to BA LGW-EBB
(Kenya Airways EBB-NBO)
3) BA NBO-LGW connecting to BA LGW-ACC
4) BA ACC-LGW connecting to BA LHR-HKG
5) CX HKG-LAX connecting to AA LAX-BOS

Any chance I'll get away with this? Also, has anyone had any luck trying to use AA miles to upgrade a CX leg biz to first on a OW Explorer?

Thank you all very much,

OWd

I doubt very much that they will approve that routing. The general rule is that you can enter and leave each continent once. In a few cases you can enter and leave a continent a second time if you are only in transit. The problem with your routing is that you enter Europe three times (from BOS, NBO, ACC) in addition to entering Africa twice (EBB, ACC), neither of which I believe is permitted.

Directly from SABRE...hopefully this helps:

1 INTERCONTINENTAL DEPARTURE AND 1
INTERCONTINENTAL ARRIVAL PERMITTED
IN EACH CONTINENT EXCEPT AS FOLLOWS:
2 PERMITTED IN EUROPE TO/FROM/VIA
AFRICA (EXCEPT NAMIBIA/SOUTH AFRICA/
ZAMBIA/ZIMBABWE). 1 MUST BE A TRANSIT WITHOUT STOPOVER BETWEEN AFRICA AND ANOTHER CONTINENT.

Thanks. They didn't let me do it as a OWE, but I got a rate of $6,800 in C (or I should say in D) from EI and AA.

What an apt handle
Is the following routing permissible
ARN-LHR-ORD-LAX-HKG-JNB-LHR-MRU-LHR-ARN
IMHO seems to fit the above rule.

Only if there is also an exception for Africa that wasn't mentioned. You have two intercontinental departures from there, JNB-LHR and MRU-LHR.

You would probably have to have a routing like this (do surface sectors count as part of the segment limit? They didn't count before but the rules have probably changed):
The two-Africa rule sounds like neither flight can be to/from Southern Africa

ARN-LON-MRU-NBO-LUN-JNB-HRE/LLW-LON-ORD

Kenya Airways is not part of OneWorld! Even on a codeshare, it's not flown on OW metal.

Oneworld just announced a new African affiliate last month, Kenya's Regional Air flights now have BA flight numbers. They added a bunch of new African routes, NBO to Djibouti, Asmara, Khartoum, Harare, Lusaka and Mombasa. I don't know if they are listed in the rules yet, but probably will be soon
