Help on RTW route...
I usually take pretty simple RTW routes so I am not experienced with all the complicated RTW rules.
I am trying to flying on a 3 continent ticket. For example, starting in Asia: HKG-LHR-LAX. (I will be adding a few more routes) Now, I want to go from LAX to HNL and then to HKG. How to I get from HNL to HKG? There is a AA code share on JAL metal, would this work? Any other suggestions? Thanks. |

HNL-HKG is pretty much impossible on a 1world rtw. You have to go back to the mainland to pick up a flight to HKG (codeshares don't count unless they are operated by other 1world members, so no JL flights). I've never had occasion to ask for clarification, but there is a prohibition against backtracking from Hawaii... I don't know if this means you have to depart to and arrive from Hawaii using different cities, or whether one of the flights has to be on your own nickel. Also, HKG is not a good place to start your 1world itinerary. It's much cheaper from either BKK or SEL (most people prefer BKK because of its central location on the 1world network-- you can go direct to LHR on BA or QF or backtrack to HKG if you want CX service). If you want to try a rtw fare, you might have better luck with a staralliance (use ANA from HNL to HKG via Japan) rtw, or a joint rtw using KE (via SEL to HKG) and another carrier, or CO (via GUM to HKG) and another carrier. Hi Your best bet is the king of RTWs Cathay-United at 105000 Bahts from BKK in BIZ and 155000 in First. Why pay more for one world when CX/UA Allows you to fly BKK-HKG-LHR-LAX-HNL-TYO-HKG-BKK

HKG, do you know if he flew LAX-HNL, could he pay a segment charge to fly back to LAX?

backtracking from HNL is not possible. (i don't think you are allowed to buy that segment, just the same as you can't buy an extra transcontinental in NA) therefore, most likely case is you should fly CX/UA. but do call the RTW desk to inquire, we all want to know the answer http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif |

It seems like I learn something new every day... all these years flying back & forth between North America and HKG and I never knew about this UA flight between HNL and NRT! Same day connection possible to my favorite CX flight between NRT and HKG, as well (if I want to wait two hours to skip UA's service). In any case, I think I'm going to do this routing myself next time... I've always been interested in putting a Hawaii stop in between North America and HKG-- now I know how to do it w/o getting my face ripped off! Thanks. P.S. bagold, The suggestion proffered by drbala will be much better than any of my proposed suggestions (unless you're planning a lot more stops than you've mentioned). |
Okay, just got off the phone w/ AA's rtw desk.
1) Only way to stop in HNL on a 1world explorer is in conjunction w/ either Auckland or Sydney on QF. 2) Buying a 1-way back from Hawaii to the mainland isn't permissable. The woman I spoke with seemed pretty familiar with the Hawaii dilemma. Now, to reactivate a rumor... She told me that the CX reps were in to AA last month and said they working on HKG-HNL approval. Who knows, maybe now that they're back to making money, ordering planes, etc., they've decided to reconsider. |
by options 2, you mean open-jaw? then it is definitely permissible.

1. Do a serach on Cathay section of flyertalk. It came up about 3 months ago. I will do one and post it anyway 2. There are no mileage restrictions 3. It has been around a long time, rumors abound about its demise 4. I would recommend you buy it directly from United ticketing office. You can return the ticket in USA if needed and they are very helpful. You can finalise the routing with United ask them to FAX the itinerary and take it with you. If you do not want to go to BKK then there are agents who will mail the ticket to you 5. I am not sure about the classes You can email me if you need more info |

I tried to be pretty clear in asking if the open-jaw was permitted, and this woman basically told me that once you've hit Hawaii, you can't come back to North America to recommence your journey, even if you make your own arrangements for travel on the open-jaw... Maybe I'll call back later and see if someone else answers the phone. |
ohhh maybe she is right, since this way you will be flying over the pacific 1.5 times -- although this still depends on how people interpret the rules

This CX/UA fare is pretty interesting. It's particularly nice to know that they will waive the minimum stay requirement in case of death of passenger!

for OWE, CX will usually waive you the 10 day rule, but they have to be your ticket issuer
