Given that the OP stated he had a return on the same aeroplane from BOM , it was definitely a transit and not a stopover point
Isn't a "transit" by definition returning to a point other than the departure point? Also, if he had two segments booked but only used one due to cancellation and reroute, that leaves an extra segment for use later. In an ideal world the original ticketing carrier should reticket without a change fee.
