AA refuses to check bag through
 

What's the point of an alliance? I will say that I have primarily been a *A flyer. Currently on an AA F award DCA-JFK-HKG-TPE. The first leg is on AA and then the other two on CX. When I just checked in the bag tag only came out for JFK and no bp for the CX flights either. I asked him to check all the way to TPE and he said the system wouldn't let him. Since I have to overnight at JFK that I means I have to drag my giant bag around the airport to the hotel shuttle both ways. Flight out on CX is tomorrow AM at 9.

I've never encountered a problem checking a bag all the way on *A. Is this an AA thing or a OW thing? Doesn't encourage me to use them more in the future that is for sure.

It's probably neither - but an overnight thing. Usually, you can't check bags through if you have an overnight layover. Have you tried this with UA and an overnight layover. I don't think UA/*A would treat it differently with an overnight layover.

This might be rather country than alliance specific. I managed to check bags through despite having overnight layovers, some even >24hrs at BKK (LX to TG), SIN ( LH to SQ) and ZRH (LH to LX / WK)...

That is not the norm in my experience.

With an overnight stop in New York I am not surprised that you could not check it through especially with it being a domestic flight to New York

The number of airports that allow such checking through is , in my experience, the minority.

There are exceptions where bags can be held for a whole day such as Singapore, Dubai and Hong Kong but these seem to be exceptions rather than norm

I don't think that this is an OW alliance issue, more a NY issue

If you had been flying on a Star Alliance carrier to new York domestically, with a flight the next day onwards, I think you would have had the same issue

This has nothing to do with an alliance and everything to do with the overnight connection. And for what it's worth, at JFK, there is no way in the world you want to leave your bags overnight. At least if you want them to make it back to you.

Nothing to do with carrier or alliance. It violates the rules because the connection at JFK is too long. Frankly, there are airports where there's no particular reason not to do an overnight interline, but JFK isn't one of them. I wouldn't take AA up if they offered.

They did you a favor by not allowing your bag to overnight in JFK. You'd be lucky to see it again.

I've had the same situation in many airports around the U.S. You just have to make plans to overnight with your bags.

I've had overnight connections in both SEA (MCO-DFW-SEA-JFK-CDG) and LAX (DTW-ORD-LAX-IAH) before on AA. In both cases when I checked in, they offered to check through to my final destination, then only through to the overnight point when they learned that I was staying overnight. I got all the boarding passes though.

Some airlines - Delta comes to mind - are explicit (in the C of C) about the acceptable duration of an 'overnight' layover with checked bags. Less than 12 hours between scheduled arrival and connecting departure and they'll keep the bag; more than 12 hours calls for claiming and rechecking next day at the connecting point.

Very few airports have dedicated room to store bags on long connections, or indeed overnight. And then you have the security issue as well.

I tend to the think the consensus is that the reason you weren't able to check your luggage through was due to the NYC connection time. When you asked the check-in agent, what was the response?

Airports in the USA/Canada do not allow overnight baggage connection even if you say that you will hang out in the terminal during that time. It has to be less than 6 hours I think.

I had the same experience connecting from AA to BA at T5 Heathrow. Overnight connections require pickup and recheck.
