I think PDX is closer to Japan than SAN. It may be a better connecting point.

This route is still very much in play:

Just saw a long story on the KATU 5:30 PM news.

And, it was in the Portland Tribune this AM:

And Now, the Oregonian weighs in:

Portland doesn't have conventional manufacturing, but it does have Intel and other chipmakers, and Intel was a major, major player in the belly freight on DLs Asia services from PDX. I seem to recall that Intel exports finished wafers, but packages and tests the chips offshore.

Northwest already has daily direct service to Tokyo from five U.S. cities: Seattle, San Francisco, Honolulu, Detroit and Minneapolis.

Hmmm, I wonder why they left out LAX? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

and New York......

The capacity cuts, with the upcoming 747-200 retirement, will definitely help the load of the PDX-NRT route. I think this is the perfect timing to add a new Northwest route. Two 330-200 flights (2 X 230 some passengers) would be a good replacement to the frequently full 747-200 (341 passengers) service between SEA-NRT.

Yeah, but you could have the SEA flight jammed every day and the PDX flight with 75 people on it.

Before you split the lift 50/50 between SEA and PDX I'd want to see the O/D breakdown on the current SEA-NRT service. I'd bet more than 50% of boardings are originating at SEA.

While I don't know the O/D breakdown, there are currently many passengers who are making connections from Alaska Airlines as well, including passengers from Portland. Some passengers also connect from Detroit, Minneapolis, and Memphis. Just as we have passengers flying form Portland and variety of Alaska Airline/Horizon Airline cities to connect, I would presume some passengers will fly to Portland to connect. There will be an increase in Alaska/Horizon traffic between these markets.

Northwest eyes PDX for flights to Tokyo

- Working on final details of service. Transfers, codeshare, etc.

- Undecided if they should start service June 1 with DC-10s to capture summer crowds, or wait until fall arrival of A332s.
