Help on a complex trip

I am thinking about a trip this spring starting Boston, to Japan for a couple of weeks, then to New Zealand for a couple of weeks and back. I would use miles for part and pay for part (or pay for Economy and use miles to upgrade), depending on what was available. Also would want to get miles for the parts I paid for. Another possibility would be to take a stop in Paris and use a Round-the-world ticket. I was looking at Korean Air for the Asian/Oceania part. Or Gaurda?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Happy New Year!!

Reward or purchase?

A RTW ticket might work out okay. 140k for coach, 220k for biz. You could also get a reward ticket to say, SIN or BKK (where intl fares are often cheaper to OZ/NZ), with a stopover in NRT. I did this a few years ago, I'd double check and make sure a stopover is still allowed. I've done OZ reward travel, but not NZ. I've had some problems booking Garuda tickets this year via NW. Given the problems there, I'd probably choose another carrier.

NW has some decent fares to SIN right now, and if you use a PK36 or other discount cert, you can knock another $100 off the ticket.

I booked a PHX-DTW-MSP-PDX-NRT-SIN plus return for the mid $600's after the PK cert.

You *may* be able to do this on one award Australian/Oceania award. See if NW will let you ticket BOS NW-DTW-NW-NRT (stopover) NW-ICN-KE-AKL. You are allowed one free stopover and one open jaw, so consider doing an open jaw between SYD and AKL if you want to hit Australia too.
