My younger son was TWA Gold by his 3rd month, paying the 10% for FC. Actually, he didn't pay it, well you know.....

I enrolled my daughter in UA MP at age 10 months. However, at XMAS, I flew her on a 1/2 price INF50 ticket. That ticket was 2x the price I paid for my wife and me, because I booked our tickets in Sept. and was planning on taking the daughter as a lap child. After Thanksgiving, I learned that this was not a good idea (she is too squirmy when she isn't sleeping).

However, the INF50 tickets do not qualify for FF miles.

I also opened a Frontier Airlines account for her and got 1500 miles just for opening the account.

It appears you can enroll them anytime, but some fares, such as INF50 do not qualify for FF miles.

This is not necessarily the case. Unless a flight is full, a gate agent can usually seat a family next to an empty seat. Therefore, your child doesn't pay and you don't have anyone in your lap.

Why would people pay for kids to get status before age 3? Unless you only fly long, fully-booked flights, it doesn't make sense.

I completely agree about entering kids in frequent flier promos. If you have several kids and spouse, a 10K promotion (e.g., NWA's Fly Free Faster), can suddenly turn into a 50K promotion.

This isn't true for all airlines. I used a half-priced ticket on NWA for Hawaii (long flight) and my son got all the miles.

At what point do you really want to find out that your holiday travel is 100% full and the little Tony the Tiger is on your lap for the next 4 hours?

Therefore, your child doesn't pay and you don't have anyone in your lap.

Number one is to avoid the "Tony the Tiger" in your lap situation noted above. Secondly, with the right bonus participation, it might be better to be earning miles on another account, if your buying right and earning right ;-)!

I didn't pay to get status, I paid so she could have a seat and be strapped into an FAA approved safety seat rather than flopping around free or sitting in someone's lap.

IMHO, given turbulence I've experienced over the years, taking a child on a plane without somewhere to buckle in is unsafe and irresponsible.

RE: INF50 fare and miles:
My 6-month old daughter just took her first flight (DEN-SJC-DEN) on UA (INF50 fare). The fare rules do, IIRC, explicitly state that INF50 does not qualify for miles; however, she was credited full miles for the trip.

No pun intended, but YMMV... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

My daughter was 15 months old when I enrolled her in British Airways program. I mileage she now earns on British can be pooled together in the household account.
