Smokin'
Well, I diligently performed a search, and could not find this topic addressed in depth.
Yes, I are a smokker. I don't apologize for it, but I do try to be polite about it. However, politeness is but a distant memory after the first 5 hours without a smoke. So, I'd like to know which (if any) airlines still allow smoking on their flights (LHR, BRU, SIN, HKG, SYD are upcoming trips). Also, do any of the US ff lounges still have smoking sections? I'd hate to spend the money on a membership and then spend all of my time in the glass cage. (Though I do love the cages; especially the little kids that point and say "Look at the smoker mommy!" in the same tone of voice they use at the zoo.) Cheers, 'toad |
Toadie, I know that the Chicago (ORD) United Red Carpet Club has a smoking lounge (cigarettes only, no cigars or pipes), but that's the only one I know of. By the way, I hear it will stunt your growth. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

There are very few U-S airlines that allow smoking, and its on the rare overseas flights.
Most airports (I think EWR) are smoke free. you have to go outside to smoke. I would check the airports websites fi they have any on smoking rules. SFO and LAX I believe have smoking rooms. So does IAD but smoke early: far from the gate! For the record: I am NOT a smoker but I respect a smokers rights to free expression as long as they are not intrusive. I would also suggest if you are going on a long flight find something to calm you down or take your mind off smoking. It can be brutal (Like a CATMAn without his PEPSI!) And on an OMNI NOTE: I have to try a Cigar sometime. So sorry I missed PremEx's post Boston F-T cigar party! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif |
Thanks, PremEx & Catman. Usually the trip to LHR doesn't bother me too much. Just bring a can of Skoal & hope I don't gross out whomever is sitting next to me. It's the long haul & layovers to A/P that have me worried!
OMNI: Catman are you sure we're not twins? 2 katz born in '65 facial hair No coke. PEPSI! Cigars Cheers, 'toad |
LAX is an entirely non-smoking facility, I believe. Most ff lounges (certainly the AA ones) will allow smoking if the airport allows it.

Hammertoad - I seem to recall there being a smoking section in Miami's Admiral's Club (terminal 5, I think it was)
would chewing Nicorette or using a nicotine patch (if you can get some) be of any use? I know it isn't as good as a cigar, but it will help to keep that nicotine craving under control. |
Hammertoad: Great new!!! Alaska still allows smoking, but you must first step outside to do it! What would you expect from a past smoker (13 years and still just one day at a time!)
|
At LAX, in terminal 6 (shared by CO & UA) the is a outside smoking area, it is on the left side of the concourse, within security, past the Presidents club. As an ex-smoker I know what it's like.
|
Hey babs, I've tried & tried and I just can't seem to get those patches to stay lit! Seriously though, it's not just the nicotine; there's nothing quite like that first bout of hacking and wheezing that comes with the after-dinner smoke. Even better, the first one after a (hopefully) long snooze.
Smoking section is the wing on Alaska, eh ranles? Believe me - there have been times when I would've gone out there! Something sticks in my memory that (Air France?) had/has a glassed in smoking area on their inter-continental flights. Or am I dreaming? Cheers, 'toad |
Forget LAX (except for the outside area at Terminal 6) or SFO or any other California airport...smoking indoors in any public building is now a no-no in the entire state.
|
Hammertoad (I LOVE that name!):
It doesn't matter how tight you roll 'em, there's no way to keep those patches lit! The only solution on long flights is to cut the top and bottom of the cigarette pack off and light the whole thing at once. When you've smoked it down, you SHOULD have enough nicotine in your system to last you until tomorrow. Of course, you have to handle the staggers well enough to get through security after you're done! -Your fellow member of the Great Unwashed |
Hey PremEx -- I know about the LAX situation but when last through SFO in November (and hopefully NEVER again!!!), I was able to sit in the glass booth, breathe deeply and not even bother to light up!

Airline information: Smoking policies at a glance!!!
International flights . Major smoker-friendly airlines clickable! April 4,1999!!! http://hem2.passagen.se/fungus/airlines.html hope this helps, k [This message has been edited by 650 (edited 04-08-99).] |
Thanks for the site! I noticed that most of the airlines that do allow smoking -- is it the passengers or the engines that are smokin'??? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
|
Cool site, k. Though I must say I agree with onefreeman. I suppose I could save my eyeshades from the UA amenity kit and use it as a blindfold? (The condemned are still offered a smoke, aren't they?)
Looks like it will remain Skoal Bandits, patches and never-never land pills for me. Either that or pay the 2000 fine for tampering! Cheers, 'toad |
since Gisela became an ex-smoker (when she was pregnant) we have a big poster at home showing a loving couple with the headline:
"kiss a non-smoker - try the difference!" |
I counted no less than 6 no-smoking signs in the lav on an AA MD80. I don't know where they found the surface space for them all. (Okay, I was bored and I counted them. That is just ONE of my personality quirks.)
|
Sounds like a neat poster, Rudi. I must say, however, that when I've kissed non-smokers I really haven't noticed any difference. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Cheers, 'toad |
arturo wan two kno who kess a toed? yu git warts ef yu kess a toed.

OMNI: Meant to say a great topic for a relative newcomer to F-T HammerToad.
And a great handle but don't worry... Cats only play with toads, not eat them! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
Flights to and from Australia are totally non-smoking. Australian government ruling!
However, if you want smoking flights, these are still available on Air France on their international long-haul flights. There is a smoking bar where one can smoke as that section is seperated by a air curtain and extra strong ventilation fans suck the smoke out of the main cabin. Other airlines which still permit smoke would most likely be the middle eastern, arabic, indian based airlines...or eastern european ones.... Swissair provides nicotine gum, though. Hope this helps... |
Thanks, C-Star. Though I'm shopping for a new airline, I'm not sure that Air France/Continental will fit the bill (and I'd fly to MCO-ATL via SFO just to avoid Delta).
Looks like I'll just have to grin & bear it and be thankful that I get to fly business so I'm one of the first to go racing down the halls in search of the closest leper congregation. Cheers, 'toad |
OMNI: Thanks, CatMan. My critters never had much truck with toads, but they do look with wondering eyes upon the leetle leezards that are so prevalent here. Just wait 'til they see a real cockaroach!
Cheers, 'toad |
Hammertoad, the reason that you do not notice the difference when you do kiss a non smoker is that you are the offender not the offendee. Ask the non smoker if THEY notice a difference!
|
As a smoker, I empathize with your plight, HammerToad.
Here is what I have found: San Jose(SJO) has a glassed in area for smoking but since its a fairly small airport, its easy to go outside. The midwest is still okay for smoking. Both Columbus Ohio and Cincinnati still permit it in airport bars and inside designated smoking areas. Pittsburgh allowed it as well at the TGIF bar. Las Vegas says they do not allow it, but it is LV, so you can smoke anyway, esp if you are spending your money in the slots. You can smoke in most airports in Mexico and Central America. As for long hauls, nicorette gum helps. If you are close to Mexico(you live in Texas right?) then you can buy it there much cheaper than in stores in the states. |
Thanks for the info, Ricechex. Sorry to say, pops moved us out of Tejas when I was but a lad. Hanging my hat in Orlando, now, so I atctually have to travel north to get to Texas!
From recent travels, here's what I know of airport smoking policies: MCO - (Thankfully) smoking is still allowed in the bar with a 1 drink minimum. DEN - Awesome smoker bar/lounge on the 2nd floor. 1 drink minimum. STL - Concourse cages for the unwashed. SFO - Concourse cages. IAD - Glass cage, far far away. But it's right by a bar and you can bring your drink in. IAH - Outside you go. DSM - Outside. ORD - Outside. (But allowed in RCC, PremEX?) OMA - Bar smoking allowed. You don't have do buy a drink; but what else are you going to do?! SAT - Bar smoking allowed. SDF - Cage! Can you believe it?? Right in the heart of tobacky country. Oh well, at least nobody kicked me out for bringing my drink in with me. Do the Admirals clubs, RCC's, etc. have to follow the policy of the airport? Or do they get to make their own rules? The bars aren't so bad, but even *I* get disgusted in the cages. Cheers, 'toad |
Vegas also has a cage in the new terminal. Walked by there a few weeks ago (after having a just excellent meal at Emeril's in the MGM).
|
Celestar 340. Noticed odd phenomenon on recent Air France flight. While checking on smoking friends in smoking lounge, I saw at least two smokers sucked out of the extra strong ventilation fans. We had taken off with a full flight and arrived with 3 empty seats. Very suspicious.
|
I wish I didn't know about this topic...
I think the Admirals Clubs in California are the only AA lounges that don't allow smoking. However, the Admirals Club smoking area at ORD is closed temporarily "due to poor ventilation". They're "building" a new room. The smoking cage at Las Vegas even has slot machines -- I'm sure they have the worst payout in town ... even worse than the main terminal!!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
OMNI: Two smoking-related in-flight announcements: "We do feature a smoking section on this flight. If you must smoke, contact a member of the crew and we will escort you to the wing of the airplane." And "Smoking in the lavatories is prohibited. Any person caught smoking in the lavatories will be asked to leave the plane immediately."
|
I think Iberia still allows smoking as does LAN Chile on some flights.
|
There are still smoking areas (inside) in British Airports, though the areas are getting smaller, and increasingly dirty.
(Gave up 6 years ago, and I still long for a cigar after a good meal, gona start again on my 70th Birthday!!!!) Stewart |
Some more intel from an ex-smoker frequent flyer:
DFW - Fuhgeddaboudit! You gotta go landside, (that is curbside) to enjoy your habit. Then you gotta go back airside through security. ATL - At least they're a little smarter... designated smoking areas within each concourse. LAS - At least one "fishbowl" smoking room in each terminal, complete with the tightest slot machines in Vegas! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Didn't know you could still smoke in the airport bars in SAT... gotta doublecheck that tonight when I pick up my mom from a biz trip to STL. |
On April 1, 1999, all Japan Airlines and Japan Asia Airways flights will become non-smoking. (from a reformed 3 pack a day smoker--we are the worst for intolerance towards smoking).
|
The Air France smoking room flights weren't too bad on the A340s, air was relatively "clean" in most of the plane--not like the bad old days when the whole cabin used to fill with smoke.
